You're definitely not experiencing piston slap. I have experienced slap on several motorcycles and they all had common themes....excessive oil consumption and really inconsistent plug coloring. You would only get a CEL if the detonation sensor quit working. I think your problem sounds like a spark knock which is amplified by the already noisy motor in these things. Either get it tuned to run 93 or go back to 87 and you will probably notice a drastic change.

everyone has stated it, but no one has actually asked, nor have you addressed it OP, but have you actually tried using regular gas. if so, did it act differently? And if not, I would definitely try it. While it won't hurt the engine to use premium every once in a while (actually could help clean out build up), the engine is not designed to use ONLY premium, as you stated that you use.

Yep! I'm not sure what fuel these trucks call for (since I won't have one for another 7 weeks) but if nothing is specified, I would use a top tier 87.

Hi, I tried regular and also from different brands.

Ex: 1/2 tank Shell regular (twice) , then 1/2 tank 91oct (Twice). 1/2 tank Total regular (twice) , then the same with 91oct. gas. My tests were testing 1/2 tanks at a time. The only change I noticed, MPG(more when using premium).

I'm using Shell 91 octane indeed, but I have to disagree regarding the engine not designed to use premium.

    Check the Owner's Manual - Section 9-1 : Specifications (Page 570) - Fuel Section.

    Fuel:
Fuel type - Unleaded gasoline only
Octane rating - (Unleaded gasoline) 87 (Research octane number 91) or higher
    Fuel tank capacity - (Reference) 21.1 gal. (80.0 L, 17.6 Imp.gal.)

I pulled this from another forum online:
Re: unleaded gasoline Octane confusion in user manual
87 is fine. But I wanted to know what this was that you pointed out, so I did a little research :
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_...rement_methods

To summarize, most of the world displays the Research Octane Number on the pump, but a few countries including the US use a different method to calculate the octane number, and thus the value we display on the pump is typically 4-5 points lower than the Research Octane Number. So if you took this vehicle to Europe, you'd want to fill it with 91 octane, but in the US 87 octane is the same thing.

You have a point there and I know there is more to it, we could end talking 'bout this matter for weeks. But at the end, I've tried with different gas and the issue persists.

BTW, thanks for the link, I'll look into it, the more we know the better and that's the point of the forum anyway, and every feedback or comment is very useful.

    Welcome OP! :)

Our '16 Tacos have two knock sensors to keep it in check. But they can fail and the ECM should turn on the mil light if they should go bad.

OP...^^^ What he says makes sense eh?? ^^

Try making lemonade, I'll buy some lolo!

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

    Update - Finally!!!

Today I went to the so long awaited appointment with the dealer's tech manager. He serviced my truck himself. He found, by my VIN number that an engine related ECU update was needed but it wasn't a TSB. So I owe you that one(for now), but I saw the report myself and the updated was applied indeed.

Then he applied the so talked about TSB-0077-16 update, he stated that my truck was in the list for that one as well.

We took a ride after the updates and so far this is a new truck. Shifting has improved and at least I tried to replicate the knocking without success. I will test it for a week at least and give you more feedback. But for now I can say the TSB0077-16 really improved the shifting experience and whatever that other update was I can feel more power when accelerating.

Too good to be true. Well, it knocked again. But this time it wasn't that loud and there was no loss of power, tried to replicate it but this time it was very difficult, not like before. So ECU update really did something and as I said earlier, it runs smoother than before with no hard shifts nor delay.

Anyways, check this out I've found in the Owner's Manual:

    Page 580 - Section 9 -1 (Specs):

    ■ If your engine knocks

    ● Consult your Toyota dealer. (Done)

    ● You may occasionally notice light knocking for a short time while accelerating or driving uphill. This is normal and there is no need for concern.** (Still concerned, lol)

Should I stick a lemon sticker on the tailgate ?

I've yet to hear mine knock, I use regular top tier fuel same brand since new even when traveling to intrastate and going over high bridges and overpasses. And if it were to start knocking on a regular basis under the same conditions now, I'd be concerned.
But I'm not towing at 3k ft above sea level either.

    Best of luck
    Cheers!

This switching back and for between engine modes is the resuleof a rush to get the 3rd gen onto the lots. Now Toyota is having to re map and re flash their badly designed systems.

This description is classic lugging of the engine. And it is harmful. It's like being in the wrong gear with a manual trans.

If your truck is auto, it's not downshifting properly in conjunction with the throttle input. If it's manual, downshift before nailing the gas.

To prove the point, manually downshift one peg at 40, which hopefully will bring the RPM up to 2k or so. Then hit the gas. I'm guessing you'll have either no knocking or much less.

Another proof is to accelerate lightly (no manual downshift) to avoid the knock, and when at 2 or 2.5k, hit the gas harder. Still guessing you'll have no knocking that way.

And it's not a detonation knock; you're wasting money if using a higher octane fuel than the manual calls for. It's not piston slap or a wrist pin either, as those would be constant, along with other symptoms.

If it's an auto, it could be something the trans TSB would address.

I think this might me the "F" reason:

    Jun 01,2017
    Manufacturer Recall NumberH0H
    NHTSA Recall Number17V356
    Recall StatusRecall Incomplete
SummaryThe V6 engine crankshaft timing rotor in the involved vehicles may have been produced with excessive anti-corrosion coating. This could cause the crankshaft position sensor to malfunction.

Safety RiskIf this condition occurs, the vehicle may display a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL), run roughly, misfire, or in some instances, stall. A stalling condition while driving at higher speeds may increase the risk of a crash.

RemedyToyota is currently preparing the remedy for this condition. When the remedy becomes available, Toyota dealers will replace the crankshaft position sensor with a new one of an improved design at no cost to customers.

So, in the mean time I just wait and pray that mine don't stall while driving in the highway or worst, downhill or in a curve ??? I'm really disappointed.

That is the Crank Position Sensor recall, most guys truck usually fail in hot weather but some have also had rough running that was cured after the sensor was replaced and the new part is available.
