Couldn't deal with the low quality of the interior anymore. Fun to drive, but wasn't fast enough. I wasn't going to get another STi. I had EJ motor problems before, enough to tell my grandchildren about it. I tried the new FA motor and wasn't that pleased.

Looks like you are paying MSRP. No way I would do that. Don't play their game. Let some other sucker do that. I bought both my Tacomas at 10% off. Not quite the 15-20 on a Ford or GM but there is room to move down from MSRP

Thank you for that advice ... maybe saved me a problem purchase ... you can add "race car driver" to your CV too ... :)

I used to run Spec Miata. I run the Lotus Cup Car Challenge now. Some day in the future, Ariel Atom....

They can be a fun car, and because they're a "LEGO" car, there is a lot of tweaking that you can do to tailor the driving experience to your liking.

That said, the interior quality is quite poor, considering what you pay (especially now that STIs cost more than $40K for some lackluster niceties). Even though they've stepped it up a bit as years have passed (04 STIs didn't come with a radio, for example), the interior will wear on you. I've daily driven my STI for the last ten years. It's been pretty heavily modified, loud (all mounts/bushings replacements add significant NVH), and it breaks somewhat often (as you'd expect with a modified car of its age and mileage). Every time it's down for a repair, I always get a stupid grin on my face when I drive it again that first few times. However, after a few weeks of routine driving to/from work and errands, there just isn't the love I always had for it. It isn't until I take a three-hour drive up into the mountains or break it again that I get that enjoyment back. I'm at the point where I don't want to make it faster (for fear of another expensive rebuild), and I feel it's slow.

By retiring it to weekend duty, I can take it out when the weather is nice. I will not get to the point where driving it becomes monotonous/mundane, where the squeaks/rattles, and all the other lack of creature comforts are endearing again. I'll not be so accustomed to the feeling of boost when I'm on the throttle, and I'll have fun with the power it has (rather than wish it had more).

Ultimately, the reason that you see so many traded in is two-fold, in my opinion:
    1) Tacoma also has an active and happening enthusiast scene. The Subaru scene has been slowly going downhill for the last 5+ years, especially as the older cars have depreciated into the hands of the young buyers. I used to organize an annual 150-200 mile drive that saw 40-50 cars show up. A few idiot drivers in that can ruin such an event, and younger drivers with sporty cars can entice people to misbehave (e.g., all the videos of Mustang drivers crashing leaving Cars & Coffee); I eventually gave up. I've lurked the Tacoma scene for a while before joining. You don't quite get that same level of asshattery that you do with Subarus, it seems.
    2) WRX/STI owners eventually mature, and want something a little more sophisticated (whether they're having families, just growing out of the toy-racer looks, etc.). There are those of us who keep the car and buy a more creature-comfort daily, and there are those who sell them instead. Some people can't keep two cars (e.g., space / financial means), at which point they need to make a choice which is most important to them.

If I had a Lotus and possibly an Ariel Atom on the way, I certainly wouldn't waste my time with a Subaru anymore...

...^^^... Maybe that's my problem, I never grew up when it came to vehicles ... :) ... and I always wanted to push everything to 120% of the performance envelope ... and then see if I could get back into the envelope safely ... had some problems with this theory in real life.

WRX-Sti seemed like a good combo to have fun with ... not get tickets (haven't had a ticket since I was a kid).

Aerial Atom is what I really like ... but that's not in my plans ... wanting to stay alive for another day.

I always wanted a motorcycle ... but I know that would be my undoing ... so I respectfully stayed away from them too.

Probably stay with my Tacoma and go-kart racing for now ... :)

Thanks for your informative post ...

SOS - I wasn't trying to discourage you from buying a Subaru. It's a great car (I wouldn't be keeping mine if it wasn't); there are just things that once you have a few years of ownership under your belt, people sometimes get tired of the compromises, and want something different.

I have a lot of experience with turbo Subarus (aftermarket parts, ECU calibration, maintenance). I'd be happy to talk with you in more detail, but I feel that muddying up this thread further down this rabbit hole doesn't help fellow members. Feel free to PM me and I'd be happy to discuss anything you'd like.

    http://arielatom.com/

    Price starts ~$65K.

Between Subarus, Lotus', and Atoms, we've gotten off-topic a bunch...I'm bowing out except for Tacoma pricing posts.

FA motor is high strung, knocks stock, and isn't that fast. How long did it take you to get them to that price on your trade? Dealer offered me 22.5 for my 2015 after hours of arguing about it. I walked out on that fool.

I was there Friday at 2pm. I had two other written offers, from other local dealers.

You have to realize I purchased my WRX new X Mas Day 2015. It was a 2016 model. I was trading it on 1/28/16. Most dealers didn't have the values up yet, and were shooting from the hip.

After 3 hours of negotiating, Friday 5:30PM, I was done with the WRX.

FYI, it took that dealer 9 weeks to sell the WRX.

Because they likely lost on it. That was a heck of a trade on your part. First offer they gave me for my 2015 was $18,000 and worked up to $22,500 while trying to tell me that they were meeting me in the middle on selling me a truck at MSRP. At least they had a sense of humor.

No. They refused to go under MSRP after a markup and then wouldn't work with me on my trade-in. They all tried several times to offer me financing that wasn't nearly as good as what I walking in with from my bank. I walked.

Has anyone had luck getting close to invoice on a truck that is ordered and not on the lot?
