My new Tacoma seem to make a clunky noise after about a second or two when shifting into park. It seems to correspond to when I lift my foot from the breaks. Sounds rough, for a guy that is use to German cars, not trucks.

Without actually checking, Service advisor made the suggestion that when I move off of break the car rolls and the gears line up for parking.. and i need to use the parking break before placing the car on park. Sounds like bull shit, unless I’m on a slope. What y’all think?

I bet it’s moving before the park locking lever engages. Slap a “Toyota says it’s normal” sticker on it and have a

Seriously, do use the parking brake before you raise your foot off the brake to test it. It should not make clunk sounds that way.

Come to a stop, shift to nuetral, pull parking brake, let off brake pedal, vehicle will settle, apply foot on brake pedal and shift to park.

Are you recommending this as normal practice? My other cars I just throw that baby in park after being completely stopped, no problem. Is this a truck thing? Sorry first truck.

Yeah no, take it to the dealer. I had a 17 auto and it went into Park right away. This is also not a truck thing.

    None as of yet
If you don't use the parking brake then yes it's normal. the truck has to roll for the parking pawl to catch and that is what you are hearing.

I do this as normal practice. It puts the weight on the brakes instead of the transmission.

“Parking Pawl” sounds like “Bonnet”, “Road Wheel” or “Spanner”, why not call it a Park locking lever for newbs?

Saw a picture of one here, and I am surprised how small it is on a Tacoma. You’d think it would be easy to break combined with the weight of the truck and a trailer on a steep hill.

Definitely a good habit to use the parking brake to lessen the stress on it.

No offense but are you retarted? If u dont do the above, all the weight of the truck is against the parking pawl and it will clunk everytime. Every time i take my cars somewhere for service the retards dont use the parking brake and that clunk happen . Retards.

I've never ever ever never heard of this!

However,I've been driving standards for a lot longer than autos and just rolled 4k, I've been kind of struggling with this daily. I feel like there must be a better way to park this thing, I use the parking break anyways just out of habit. I'm glad you asked man!

The parking pawl takes a lot longer to engage compared to other vehicles I’ve had. I’ve never had a vehicle roll so much after putting it in park. If I’m on any kind of slight incline I pull the E brake then put into park, and keep E brake engaged.

My 2019 Tacoma does the same thing sometimes I notice it more when I pull in the garage where it’s more quiet here is what I found it’s coming from the center center console where the shifter is located I’m thinking it’s the shift inner lock solenoid applying this is the system that you have to push the brake pedal to get out of park .at times it’s pretty loud

Come to a rest and put the truck in park with foot still on brake, pull the parking brake. Take foot off the brake no movement. The other cars you have had moved as well. You probably just didn't feel or hear as much cause they were lighter and presumably lower to the ground. You said they were German so probably had tighter tolerances/better fit and finish than a Taco truck as well.
