Wondering what peoples thoughts are on the towing capacity of the 3rd vs 4th Gen Tacoma?

Even with the increase of horsepower and torque I can't imagine the 4 cylinder turbo engine would be able to pull as efficiently or be as durable.

Anyone hear of real world testing done to compare these two trucks?

No real world but my prediction is it'll tow like an Ecoboost engine. Meaning it'll tow fine but because the engine will be under hard boost for the majority of the time, it siphon fuel from the tank with more purpose than a previous gen Tacoma would.

I’m no engineer but turbo charged engines aren’t new technology any longer. My truck is the 3.5l V6 and it pulls my 4k boat OK. I wouldn’t hesitate to go to the turbocharged model if I was willing to pay the higher price.

    It’s all about the numbers.
More torque equals an easier tow.

The 3rd gen has a car motor. Not a great tow vehicle.

I don't get why people get so hung up on cylinders. If it makes more power and torque it makes more power and torque. So, unlike gender, we can assume it'll do the job better.

we can't assume gender now a days, but we can assume more horsepower and torque regardless of cylinders will do a better job towing. It sounded better in my head.

If the new model doesn’t tow better than a 3rd Gen it would be a huge miss on Toyota’s part.

I’d bet towing will be a big improvement.

So what do you consider a 4 cylinder turbo? It's all about displacement, or not?

A turbo will have a fairly flat torque curve, making it a great motor to tow with. Add the new 8 speed, and I am sure it will tow much better.

    that is a interesting position.

Personally, I don’t believe any of that political correctness BS. I’ll make my own assumptions. I don’t think the fourth gin engine is going to be all that great long-term. Look at the Ford eco-boost grab a load of those blowing up. Lots of issues

And yet nowhere near as many issues as people want to make it out to be.

Neither is going to be great at towing and both are rated about the same. They're not designed with towing as a priority. The 4th gen will have more low-end torque so it'll feel better off the line and a little more effortless compared to the 3rd gen which seems to live around 3500 RPM when it needs power.

    Pertaining to the eco boost?
There are all kinds of issues with it. Carbon buildup, water intrusion in cylinders, condensation in pre-cooler, PCV valve issues, premature timing chain wear, excessive oil consumption. Not to mention the recall, and the lawsuit.
But you’re welcome to your opinion.

And like I said, nowhere near as many issues as some want to make it out to be. I never said there weren't issues. But the sky isn't exactly falling when it comes to these.
