Nice truck, I looked at your thread and saw all the modifications you have done.

I'm no expert in that area, but would the tires alone cause that much of a reduction in mileage?

I think he just means the center of the tread might wear quicker at higher pressures. Some tires get pretty round in the middle when you put a lot of pressure in them, and that makes the center of the tread wear out quicker than the rest of the tread. Just pay attention to your tread and if you can detect uneven wear is starting and it's warn more in the middle, then that's why.

I don't notice any appreciable uneven tread wear, but I adjust my pressures a lot for different situations, and I always have good quality tires and a straight alignment so YMMV. If anything the edges of my treads show more wear than anything else, people say I take corners fast :notsure:

I wouldn't try it with winter tires, they have a really soft tread compound. It's hard enough to keep those wearing evenly at normal pressures. I prefer to keep those around 30-33 most of the time since anything higher reduces traction.

I have a (no mods) 2013 DC Sport 4.0L v6 auto and depending on which gas station I use I get between 18.9 and 20.2. I am heading out this weekend on a 350+ mile round trip. I will let you know Sunday what I get. Right now without trying I am getting better than my 03 4runner by 2mpg. But that truck has 200,355 miles on it. I am thinking I will average about 22. We will see.

    Thanks man.

I'm sure part of it is because all I ever drive in is stop and go traffic. I didn't compensate for the bigger tires either. Also this is my first manual but I usually try to shift around 2500 rpm. Maybe I just can't drive stick for shit

He wasn't saying "might" he was saying his tires "coupled"?

Anyway, I've been running max sidewall or 44 psi even up to 50 psi with no coupling or uneven wear. I turn fast too, maybe that is balancing out the center wear.

Currently stock, unless you count 100 pounds of rock rails.

About 20 miles a day, kind of aggressive (lead foot), city driving, 600' elevation (DFW,TX).

    16-17mpg.

Best I ever got was 20 on the highway in Colorado pulling a motorcycle trailer.

For all of you getting these great mileage numbers, is this ongoing or just one tank? I can cram 20+ gallons in my tank at the risk of damaging the charcoal filter, and drive well over 400 miles on a tank. Then on the next fill up just run it till the pump kicks off, and it will show a very high MPG that is incorrect.

My last trip turned out to be exactly 201 miles round trip, I literally ran out of gas as I pulled into the gas station in my hometown! 17.8 gallons later I calculated 11.2 MPG... and that's highway only. :'(

Brand new '14 Dbl Cab, 4x4 V6. I have less than 400 miles on it. I got 16.5 mpg on the first tank. I hope it gets better than that.

I know it is comparing apples and oranges, but I got 18+ in a G37 3.7L V6 and I flogged the sh*t out of that car. The pedal was always down.

I have just read thru a bunch of the fuel mileage threads, then I looked back again, I think there are too many variables for us to "expect" consistency with each other.

Just looking at other avatars, some of you are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay up north in Canada, and Im waaaaaaaaaaay down south in Louisiana. Seems to be a HUGE difference in fuel octane rating, fuel grade, ethanol/free, summer/winter blend, altitude humidity, temperature, driving habits, auto/stickshift, 4wd/2wd, truck weight, tires, dirty MAF, maintenance fluids synth/conv, the list goes on and on.

With the 4.0L input from 3 different forums, I have caluclated a Mean of 18mpg, Median of 16mph, Mode of 15-16mph

It looks like the 2wd access cab trucks are at the higher mpg and the double cab 4wd trucks lower. But the other factors above are going to throw that off. there are some v6's reporting 21+ mpg and others reporting 11mpg's.

Yeah...Cold engine driving and winter fuel blends are havoc on MPG for a tacoma...You can see from my fuelly that my MPG dive into the gutter once dec/jan/feb hits because of the cold weather and winter gas...

You can def improve MPG on a tacoma by driving with an egg under you gas foot...slow acceleration and trying to time lights etc. I try to never go over 70mph on the highway because it's literally costing $ per hour of driving. It drives my wife crazy "Why do you drive your truck like an old man and my subaru like a race car?" because I pay for my gas and she pays for hers :) and she get 28...
I had a civic before my tacoma and that got as high as 36mpg on my 10 mile commute...

I'm at 20mpg summer and 16mpg winter with city driving and a very conservative foot. I made one long highway trip in Jan and got 3.5 mpg more out of a tank

Serious sound deadening in the cab and extensive audio system.
Ok, first I know it is a truck. But I know people with other trucks, some larger with bigger engines that get better mileage. Also when i was a teenager, I had a 1968 Torino GT, 390 high performance engine with a Holly 780 double pumper 4 barrel carb. It would pass up most everything on the highway except a gas station and I could get close to 13 mpg if I tried. So come on, with todays technology are we saying a 2007 with a 4.0 double cab can't do better?

Also in the past, everything I had would respond to the way I drove and maintained the vehicle. I keep my tire pressure maintained, the wheels aligned, the filters changed, and tune-ups. But I can't get better than 18 mpg even with good gas. The truck is completly stock, no mods, except for a VERY premium sound system.

It just doesn't matter how I drive. I have driven like a little old lady on Sunday trying to get better mileage, no help. I have driven it like I stole it, same results. I recently made one of my regular 600 + mile trip. Cruise control, no faster than 55 mph and I got 18 mpg. On trips in the past, I have driven at 80 mph +, still 17 to 18 mpg on the highway. I often get as low as 14 or 15 in town.

I feel there is no real incentive to drive conservatively. I just doesn't matter, be a feather foot or lead foot, I get the same.

I really love my truck, everything about it, EXCEPT the gas mileage. But if this keeps up and I can't get this resolved, (I would actually accept 21 or 22 on the highway), I will likely sell it.

There is no cure for the bad gas mileage.

Toyota trucks have always been bad on gas but ultra reliable.

    My old 2001 3.4L V6 got 16-18mpg.
    My old 2004 4.7L V8 got 15-17 mpg
    My current 2011 4.0 V6 6speed gets 16-18mpg.

My next vehicle won't be a Toyota unless they start seeing 22-24mpg.

I think people are just getting annoyed because the EPA ratings Toyota releases are so far from the actual mpg we are seeing.

That and the industry standards are so much better (even for full size), people just can't believe a small truck gets such bad mileage.

I noticed more and more "new" posters making these threads, obviously looking for a cure to the problem, when unfortunately they were lied to by Toyota and now are stuck with an underperforming engine.
