    Hello all!

I bought a Tacoma back in 2006 (new), sadly last week someone ran a light and hit me. The insurance company is saying that it's totaled. Looking at the estimate to repair it they are saying close to 10K, could be more once they remove the front part of the truck and start looking at the engine. They are giving me a couple of options, #1 they would give me $14K for the truck, or #2 I could retain the truck by buying it from them. They would cut me a check for a little over $7800. I would be out of pocket getting it repaired a bit. Also for insurance, I would not be able to get full coverage, only liability due to some stupid Texas law.

If I go option #1, I would be looking at a 2021 Tacoma. I've heard 3rd gen Tacoma have some issues, but I've also read that most of the issues have been fixed with the 2019 and newer.

Just looking for some advice on what y'all might do. Trying to figure out if I should just buy a new Tacoma or try to fix my 2006. Again, I'm not 100% sure what other issues my 2006 might have as the body shop was only tore down my truck.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I'd take the $14K and put it towards a new truck. Don't know the situation - how many miles on your truck? What was the nature of the damage? What else might be lurking? But my first reaction is just move on...

Agreed. Without seeing the truck, I'd probably take $14k and either put it towards a 3rd gen or a newer 2nd gen depending on your preference and financial abilities.

My truck has 189K miles. The damage is the front part of the truck. Bumper, grille, front lamps, radiator support, RT/LT mount plate, A/C condenser, and etc (that's just part of the list).

I'm leaning towards a new Tacoma over buying a used one. I'm always worried about previous owners.

    I'd take their offer.

$14K seems reasonable for 2006. Still sucks in having to replace it.

3rd generation is bigger and heavier. I like first-gen, but happy with my truck. Just takes a little while to adjust. Tundra was just a little too large, Tacoma fits that "sweet spot" of parking garages and doing what I need. I went with DCLB, but for serious off-road AC with MT makes more sense. Knee issues, so I'm better off with an Automatic. The crawl mode is impressive. Noisy as hell (Brake booster pump is loud) but dropping a 6x6 on the ground and having it crawl over it is super impressive.

In the words of Steve Miller . . . Take the money and run. I would look for a later 2nd gen. Show us what you finally end up with.

I agree with most here. If finances are not an issue, take the money and buy new. Not worth spending out of pocket to fix the older truck. Even of you did fix the truck, you'd likely start feeling alot of problems (both real and imagined) from the sounds of the damage done.

Also, since you had mentioned buying used would be issue with vehicles history concerns (which would again be a better option than throwing $10K+ at your current truck), I'd think this would convince you to move on with the new truck.

    Good luck.

I totally agree, take the money. A new truck comes with 2yr or 25,000mile Toyota care. $10,000/36 = 277.78 Savings

New truck out the door depending on model and features less $ 14,000 insurance. ie: $42,000(my new selection) - 14,000 = $28,000 finance @ 5% would be 72 payments of $ 450. Keep in mind you didn't spend the $ 10,000 grand above. Also, these #'s are based on my selection and interest is based on your credit history.

Take the $14K. Toyota Southeast Financial is offering 0% financing on 2021 Tacoma now.

Fight for more than $14k. Right now, that same truck goes for about $18k, at least in CA. that also depends on the trim you had and if it was 4x4. Rule of thumb, the insurance company always has more than their original offer.

    Sorry for your loss.

Unless the vehicle has a lot of sentimental value, I'd take the $14K.

If you have it repaired, they can make it look right....but it won't ever be right. I'm not sure if you'd end up with a salvage title or not...but if you did that would cut the value of the truck in half after repair. Even if you don't, the CarFax will forever document it had a crash that will lower the value of the truck.

In other words...this is the only opportunity you'll ever have to sell that truck for this much cash.

    Phil
