The dealership may be told what to do by Toyota and not allow them to put on certain brands, most likely due to their licensing/resell agreement with the tire company. You, yourself, can put on an tire brand you want. Most people "believe" they have to replace like-for-like what came on the vehicle, which is obviously untrue. Most people cave at the dealership as they think that the dealership is the final word on these types of topics.
I ran Cooper AT3 LT on my 2nd gen for 40K and they were champs in snow, Moab and off-road on some pretty rock trails. I cannot wait until the Goodyear pos wear out on the new truck so I can go back to Cooper (too cheap to do it now).
Do what you want to as many others have said, have the satisfaction of indicating that you can put on any tire you want and walking out of the dealership. More people should do this more often, perhaps we can get a movement going?

You won't have to wait long if you do any amount of driving. I have almost 20K on my factory Goodyear's and they're a little under 1/2 life and wearing quickly.

Now, if you are someone who drive gently, or just putter around town they're ok at this point. But, not me. It's the Indy 500 out there!

That would be nice, but the problem is that forum members who are more attuned to things like this are not the majority of Tacoma owners. Most go merrily along with their stock trucks, taking it to the dealership and doing most of what they recommend. Imagine the stress dealer service managers would have if all his customers were like us? :)

It's gonna need a full on body off restoration to get up to your standards. The surface rust on the frame would drive you bonkers even if you were gonna sell it

Agreed and always thinking about what could be! Yes, that stress level for the service managers would be very high and most likely have them hiding in their offices.

Hah, that's actually what wore my tires. I use to live in an area where I had to go up and over a mountain every day. I drove that thing like a sports car so that probably didn't help :anonymous:

Now I don't travel that mountain much so I'll hopefully get better miles outta my tires.
