I have a 2009 Tacoma with a backup camera with a small rearview mirror screen (2.5 inches) that gives no information or perspective when I am reversing. I recently sat in a 2011 or 2012 Tacoma that has a OEM backup camera that displays red and green grid lines on the mirror screen that give the driver some idea of distance when in reverse. Is it possible to switch my camera in my 09 Tacoma for an updated model with grid lines?

EDITED TO SAY: Ignore what I say in this post because it's wrong. See the postings below...
    --------------------------------------------
I bought one on eBay and it had the lines. I have a 2012, which already had a backup camera with lines... so I suppose it's possible that the lines are part of the mirror display, but I'm pretty sure the lines are from the camera.

The seller was b_and_a_computer, and here's the camera: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Toyota-Tacoma-OEM-Backup-Camera-2009-2010-2011-2012-/380484926697?_trksid=p4340.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222001%26algo%3DSIC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D11%26meid%3D2692665338942558796%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D1005%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D380482616975%26

You'd just have to figure out how to swap out your camera in the tailgate, but there are lots of threads on here that discuss similar topics. Search for "pop and lock" etc.

    Welcome to TW

I have an 09, but installed the 12 mirror. there's some wiring to make the homelink work, but everything else is plug and play.

Note, the temperature will not display on the 12 mirror.

    Delmarva:

Question: When you installed the 2012 camera did it have the lines in the mirror to help gauge the distance when in reverse?

    Thanks,

    Dnando

I'm changing my answer to agree with this. I'm working on installing a different backup camera (because my tailgate is coming off) and while testing, I saw:

    - When there's no camera signal, the rearview display is just a blue screen with gridlines
    - When I attached the new camera (with gridlines) there were 2 sets of lines -- the Tacoma ones and the lines from the new camera
