    4runner is a no brainer.

    ONLY reasos i got Taocma was the bed, i need a bed for work, otherwise i would be driving a trail edition, zero question.
    when it comes to which is more capable off road, you cant argue against the 4runner. Shorter wheelbase, coils out back, and the KDDS system (basically no sway bars while off roading) is friking awesome

    the TE 4runner is alot better looking than the broha too. plus all the better options, and capability, if i had the money thats what i'd be driving. i'm sure its just a matter of time before TEricson (the spokesperson for toyota), chimes in and will let us all know how the broha is far more superior than anything we could ever imagine

    My 98 4Runner has always been good to me and my family throughout the years. I'm sure the new TE's are just as great, so my vote goes to the 4Runner! :D

    Looking at dimensions, the Taco actually has more rear seat headroom than the 4runner. Leg room nearly identical. Hip room advantage goes to the 4runner.

    In my early looks at the 4runners on the lots, the roof comes down in between the front and rear seats. Do the double cab tacos have same thing, or is it smooth from front to back?

    really? i thought the 4runners had a dual VVTI 4/0L with a significant amount more HP than our trucks..

    So not much love for the Taco Baja (lol...kinda sounds like a new item on the Taco Bell menu...lol). I pose these following questions for added discussion flavor....

    What about 4runner trail vs. Double Cab TRD Off Road 4x4 package? The interior (drivers cockpit) look very similar, and exactly same steering wheel and entire, I believe. Maybe the Baja is so new/limited there is not enough experience to compare apples to oranges.

    What if the Tacoma dc was supercharged? Would that close the gap?

    One thing that holds me back from the Trail, and maybe I am just old school and like my 4x4's simple.....the electronic speed controls on the 4runner TE....would that take the "fun" out of driving off road. It appears that the traction controls and such on the TE makes it a point and shoot driving experience with little need for driver skill when it comes to braking, accelerating, etc.

    One reason I don't ever want to lose my '99 Tacoma is that it doesn't have all of the electronic overrides. It doesn't even have ABS ( which I love and makes playing in the Snow very fun! No interference when I slam on those brakes and slide around in donuts.)

    whether you buy a new tacoma or new 4runner they are going to have VSC, vehicle stability control. is it a pain in the ass? actually not really. you CAN shut it off easily and NOT have it, also when diff lock is engaged ABS is disabled, so itll be just like your current 99 :woot: , but also it provides ATRAC to the vehicles. ATRAC is best compared to having what is similar to front/rear lockers. if you are on rugged terrain, and your drive wheel is in the air, ATRAC will stop the free-spinning wheel and give power to the wheel that has traction FRONT AND BACK when in 4WD. what the 4runner TE has that the broha and off road do not is "crawl control." crawl control, to the best of my knowledge, is similar to having a factory marlin crawl box in your 4runner. it crawls along at a slow, low gear thus unaffected by bumps when going over rocks and inclines UNLIKE the human foot pushing the gas or brake in the tacoma. IMO, the 4runner TE has more options, looks very nice, ive seen them in person, and doesnt have gay flashy decals all over it. its totally up to you and its ultimately your money, but im sure alot of people will agree with me when i tell you this.

    I seriously considered the 4runner TE, but ultimately decided that the Tacoma was the better overall value for me. Once the navigation option started becoming bundled with the TEs, it became a vehicle >$40k which wasn't something I wanted.

    The most significant upgrades on the TE are the KDSS, which is a $1700 rear sway bar that has hydraulic endlinks, so to speak, that freely expand/contract when you are in offroad situations that require rear end articulation. Effectively, this is the same as disconnecting the rear-sway. On the highway, it functions as a standard rear sway bar and assists in reducing body roll. If you need a rear sway on a 4wd tacoma, you can purchase an ADDCO or HELWIG, and remove the endlinks when you want to go offroading.

    Another TE upgrade is the crawl control software, which was mentioned above. There are four modes that the driver sets depending on the terrain...I believe this works the same as the A-TRAC, and down hill assist, where the driver needs only to steer the wheel and let the software control the throttle and brakes.

    TE comes with the rear differential locker, the SR5 and Limited models do not. TE also comes with 16" wheels simliar to the FJ Cruiser, and tires more suited for offroad. TE has waterproof fabric seats which are supposed to be pretty nice quality. Obviously, the TE has the blacked out fender flares, handles, front/rear bumper covers.


    As far as I could tell with the Baja, the only mechanical upgrades it has over the TX is the upgraded Bilsteins with the remote-reservoir shocks and Eibach front springs. The factory lift is 2". Obviously comes with the TRD exhaust, the beadlock-style wheels and graphics. Its also guaranteed built in the San Antonio plant, whereas some Tacomas like mine come from Mexico.

    I really like both. The only thing I'm not sold on is the bubble tailights and the pull out cargo tray. Probably going to see what it takes to pull the tray out and get it to a level cargo area. Will have to give it a fair chance first though. What's funny is, we got this for my wife to drive, now I'm going to take it over! Probably going to trade the taco in for a camry for her.

    Sorry to jack your thread op, I really like the trail edition. Broke it in on a 1200 mile trip and no complaints. Could have come with more ballsy tires, and the cargo tray is undecided. The water resistant seating material seems good so far. Oh, and would like a few more non-door cup holders, but there is plenty with the rear centerseat thing folded down.
