I didn’t know this was a thing. I’ve never noticed a smell from the bed mat. There are generally much more stinky things in my bed. I would much prefer to sleep on the ground than in the bed.

The warmer it is, the more it will out-gas.

Buy a roll of artificial grass and cut it to the same size as ur bed mat (or the truck bed). Sell your bed mat to someone else who need it. No smell in the summer time and it does the same job preventing stuff from sliding around. Also, during the summer time the rubber mat is super hot to the touch especially if you have pet.

I always buy my cars new cause I want to be the first one to fart in the seat or look out the windows. Not at the same time of course, I'm not that talented.

Got it. I think if you are that worried you could slide the bed mat out of the truck when you go to sleep.

Has anyone experienced the smell transferring to stuff stored in the bed? I have a cap on my bed, but one thing I have started to notice while out in the woods is my things sliding around and hitting the sides of the bed. I am considering buying a OEM bed mat but was unaware of the apparent smell owners have had. I ask about the smell transferring because I will carry and store hunting gear in the bed during the season. And while my clothing is kept in their own containers or on my person my thought is that the smell may still transfer to other gear like packs.

I do like the idea of the grass, or just going to lowes and buying some outdoor carpet and laying it down in the bed. My only concern from that would be getting blood stains or something of that nature on the carpet/grass. Where with a rubber mat I can easily hose down and wash the mat.

I’m sure if you left the mat outside for a couple weeks or so it would be enough to not stink up your stuff. Personally I uninstalled my bed mat I put down some L tracks instead.

Get a can of Xylene from the paint section of Home Depot. Rub it down with some thick rags and wash. Xylene should dissolve and remove much of the solvents from manufacturing. But test it on a small spot on the back first and keep the xylene far away from your paint.

I thought Harbor Freight on Black Friday just smelled like BO and desperation?

Back on topic, took 2-3 months for my new bed mat to stop smelling like chemicals. Scrub it a few times with a brush and dish soap and leave it out for a week, should speed things up. I have a tonneau cover so that probably slowed it down.

Yeah, mine was rank. I've left mine out in the driveway for a month or two and flip it over every week or so. I have a shell on it now, and the truck is garaged and stays in a parking deck at work so there was no chance for it to really get any sun exposure. When I first put it out and it got good and hot on a 100-degree day in the sun, I could smell it from across the yard.

I've scrubbed it down a few times when I am washing the truck -- each time it helped a lot. And I hose it down when I'm watering plants/etc -- now I barely smell it when I am near it. If water pools up on it, especially when it was new, there is/was definitely a greasy/shiny/almost metallic residue coming up out of it.

I want it as odorless as possible because we also plan on sleeping in the back.

Your insurance company would be horrified to hear that you aren’t looking out the windows while farting. Accident waiting to happen.
