Oil is cheap. I'll buy synthetic and keep changing at 3-5k. I've got a truck sitting at the shop with a $2000+ bill now that it's full of sludge and making no oil pressure.

Oil threads tend to get stupid. I use Mobil 1 every 5000 miles. I do it myself so and oil change is around $30 for oem filter and Mobil 1.

Synthetic for sure. Spend a lot of time on bobistheoilguy.com and there is a lot of evidence that synth is the way to go with low SAP's. The best oil I have run across is Mobil One ESP. Not EP but ESP. It's a euro spec blend for Diesel engines but guys run them in direct injection WRX's to prevent carbon build up. The UOA's are coming back with little viscocity loss over 5k.

Only issue is that it is not a resource conserving oil.

I use gold cap 5w-30 Mobil 1 ... it may be pricey if you walk into advanced auto and pull of shelf... order it online and go pick it up, and normally they have 30% off your order ;)

I called toyota directly, their 'technical' help, and asked about oil change intervals with synthetic. They stated that by design, whether you use synthetic or conventional, to change at 5000 miles. So thats what I do, synthetic at 5000. I stick with the synthetic because it has better cold start lubrication over conventional. As in winter cold.
