That's pretty much how I planned to build mine, but a little slimmer, but I don't have a workshop let alone a plasma and a welder so all in on tools and steel I'm better off buying one. Though my friend just picked up the HF Mig 140 so I'll probably go SOS weld together.

 

You can do it! Like I said in the beginning. I wanted one for 15 years. Use my experience to reduce that timeline dramatically.

It boils down to money for me. It's a distant thing anyway. My big purchase for the year was UCAs and unexpected tires.

Do the long math. Are you going to wrench 20+ years, weld on your truck 20+ years, do all your own maintenance?

A decent welder is going to be cheap in the long run.

I figure I have around $175 in materials to build the bumper including what I paid the contractors.

 

This. I am sure it has at least two. Or the whole bumper is a 1/4 wave 40m antenna in disguise.

About how many hours do you have in this build.

 

I dunno? One hung over morning, another afternoon of tacking things together, another afternoon of final welding.

I don't count the paint. It's ongoing. When things look dingy, I give it another coat.
