So I have a 2019 Tacoma Double Cab TRD Off Road 4x4 and need some assistance with the capabilities of this truck. I want to only take 1 vehicle on vacation and am running into a numbers issue.

    Truck Curb weight 4425

    Fuel 135

    Me 220

    Wife 130

    3kids 180

    Topper150

    Dog 120

    Equals 955

    Total vehicle weight 5360

This is before my bass boat and trailer which weighs 3000 pounds, so with a 300 pound tongue weight that puts me at 5660 pounds which is 60 pounds or so over the GVWR with the payload of 1175 pounds included. This is before any luggage.

This however still puts me 3,000 pounds below the GCWR of 11.360 pounds with the boat, truck, and all family.

So I can either not take the dog and put the luggage under the topper or remove the topper and take the dog,or keep the topper on and put all the luggage and the dog in the boat in a crate, which to me defeats the point of having a topper.

It’s just kind of frustrating because both a ranger and a Canyon have over 400 pounds more payload capacity than the Tacoma, but I love everything about my Tacoma except for this capabilities issue, unless I’m thinking about it wrong.

Put wife, children and luggage in truck. Drive to airport, put them on plane to exotic location. Return home, hitch up boat, put dog in truck, drive to fishing location.

Put the luggage in the boat, in waterproof boxes unless you have some sort of cockpit cover for the boat. 60 pounds over GVWR I wouldn’t be too concerned about, I would bump the tire pressures up a bit for the extra load.

Yeah I’m not getting an F-250 or a Tundra right now. I get great gas mileage and never have any issues toting the family around except for just trying to take everything on vacation. I just can’t justify upgrading to a bigger truck for the extra capabilities benefit once or twice a year. If it came down to it. I could take two vehicles.

The Tacoma is great at squats.

    Honestly you’d be fine though.

My truck weighs 5450lbs with me and my 105lb wife, tank of gas and about 100lbs of gear in the bed. I’ve towed 2000lbs of drift boat and trailer with and additional 500lbs of gear with no issues.

If you have a stock leaf pack that will make more issues than if you had airbags or aftermarket leaf packs

I guess its good that you consider the numbers. Most don't. Most of the offroad trucks are significantly over the GVWR.

To be honest though, If I wanted to travel with a wife, 3 kids a dog, and a trailer, I wouldnt have bought a Tacoma.

Don’t worry. When the wife finds out you posted her weight. The truck will be 220 lbs lighter.

Take the camper shell off, put your spare tire in the boat and load all cargo in the boat. Free up your payload to have more available tongue weight and add it to total GCWR.

You've done the numbers. You're not grossly overloading it. I wouldn't stress it, just Keep it at the speed limits down the highway with that trailer and your truck will handle it all just fine.

Regardless of weight limits, 3 kids in a Tacoma? We’re cramped in my double cab with two kids in car seats. Sounds like you need a bigger vehicle for trips.

What does the wife drive? Can it tow the boat?

My opinion is that the Tacoma’s low GVWR is mostly due to the soft rear springs. With airbags, upgraded shocks, and better front pads I’d be comfortable going a decent bit over GVWR personally, in the neighborhood of 200-300 pounds like your looking at, but I’d be testing it with cargo first as I can haul a lot of weight for work on a semi regular basis. YMMV

My kids are little, 5 and under. One is in a booster and the other two are in car seats.they fit back there fine. My wife drives a Chrysler Pacifica which is our family vehicle. We were just trying to do it with one vehicle. For those of you saying I need a bigger truck, my yearly gas savant driving the Tacoma far outweighs my need to get a bigger truck with less gas mileage, especially when 90% of the time there is boat attached to my truck when I am driving with the kids.

I wouldn't stress too much about the numbers, the rated numbers factor in a little forgiveness. It may not be the most enjoyable ride, but it'll get you there and back in true Toyota fashion.

Just FYI the other mid sized trucks don't really have that much more payload capacity. All the companies advertise "up to" XXXXlbs max payload, once you start adding in 4x4 and all the accessories it's probably a lot closer than you think.

Be sure to start slowing down maybe one town before your actual stop. That's a bunch of weight to put the Whoa on. Be safe with those kids.

I'm normally pretty critical about people exceeding their weight limits but in this case I think you'll be fine. It's not gonna handle like a sports car but I think you're within safe operating limits. 60 lbs is arguably within the tolerance of error of your weight estimates. Make sure your family and dog go to the bathroom and don't eat a big breakfast before setting off. Put your luggage and any gear in the boat. Do you have trailer brakes? Do you have some kind of rear helper springs?
