It's simple, remove the unnecessary weight from the truck, put your cargo in the trailer.

My truck weighs about 5000lbs empty right now. And I would say I’ve had the truck loaded to damn near 7000lbs including 4 passengers and their luggage. Went on an 8 hour road trip with no issues

Trade it on a Canyon or Ranger. Sounds like they would get you where you need to be.

Or just go a little over.

Get your truck weighed. You may find out that the weight of a tank of gas is included in the curb weight.

At least you’ll have an actual base weight that includes you, a full tank and the topper.

Hell no. Mini van or Highlander. It would well and truly suck to spend eight hours with five people and a dog in a Tacoma.

I was at the transfer station recently and was surprised to find my DCSB OR, sliders, leer cap, me (190lbs) and half a tank of gas weigh 5100. Besides the sliders and cap, my truck is stock.

Edit: when I checked in, my rig + trash was well over 6000 pounds.

So if the truck weighs more than the advertised 4425 stock does that mean the payload is actually less than advertised 1175 or can we go above the 5600 pounds for the GVWR that is advertised?

The GVWR and CGWR on the door plate and in the owners manual are set in stone. You're close and not much over if at all. As you'll see browsing these forums there are a lot of Taco drivers that are way over GVWR without even knowing it. I'd give it a go and see how it performs.

FWIW, the payload of the Tundra is only a few hundred more lbs than the Taco. It's only a half ton. Although the tow capacity is much more. To get into a "real" truck, you'd need a 3/4 ton domestic.

    It probably will work.
Likely the tongue weight is not 300 lbs. either way put some luggage in the boat to balance it.
If I posted my athletic wife’s GVW I’d not have a boat anymore and likely not a build budget for a while. :)

Or he'll be left without a 4425lbs curb weight truck.

What kind of fuel mileage are you getting that makes all this make sense? Tacoma's have terrible fuel mileage

I am actually getting great fuel mileage. I’m averaging around 20 just driving around. I just drove back from Missouri to Tennessee today and averaged 25 MPG. That was hand calculated and on my dash MPG meter. 370 miles only took 14.8 gallons to fill her up

Man that is a big dog. What breed? My doggo (Carolina dog) weighs 50 lbs., and I still think she’s too big.

I think you can tow it OK. I agree with others this is a pretty rugged truck, and as long as you don’t stress it too much too often you should be OK. (Although backing up a hill with the MT is a different story, as I’ve posted elsewhere.)

When I was in your shoes I had a minivan. I’m not proud of it, but it was the best way to haul a bunch of kids and dogs and stuff. But I see your point and respect your desire to have your own manly vehicle like the Tacoma.

    Good luck!

Yes, payload will be less than advertised if truck weighs more than advertised. Whatever the truck weighs, subtract that amount from 5600 and you will have your remaining payload capacity. Don’t exceed your GVWR, not worth it if you get into a problem with insurance company.

    Sir,

He is a massive Golden Retriever. He was the size of a mammoth when we picked him up at 6 weeks old and hasn’t stopped.
My wife’s minivan is our go to family vehicle. We love it. 90% of the time that is what we take when we go places as a family. Since my kids are little the Tacoma fits our needs nicely and allows me to still put a deer in the back and tow a boat, and get good MPG!
