Every 100 lbs you can move out of the truck and into the boat reduces your weight in the truck by 87 lbs.

But I'm there is no way in H*** a Tacoma is going to work long term with 3 kids. They tend to grow. You will eventually need a full size crew cab.

I’m at 5900lbs with me in the truck before the trailer and equipment.

Tractor & trailer weigh approx. 7500lbs.

Mini ex and trailer weigh approx. 5900lbs.

The truck doesn’t look to be squatting bad. Is it stock or do you have some airbags or bigger springs in the rear?

I get a lot of questions about load capacity, towing performance, and towing safety.

First off, awesome that this is even a consideration for you. So far, you are way in front of the curve.

Some people get the towing standards of SAE J2807.

    https://www.natda.org/news/know-your-pickups-weight-carrying-limits/

Your capacity already accounts for a full tank, two 150 lb people, and a load distribution hitch. Those are around 70 lbs.

    Now redo your math.

    Have a great family trip.

The numbers are there for cautious folks that read them. I own a 2019 trd off road and haven’t towed with it yet since honestly just haven’t had the need to so far. Plus I try not to in the break in period just because that’s the type of person I am.

However, if the new truck I have compares anything slightly alike to the second gen towing ability, what you listed in the original post will be zero problems at all unless the transmission can’t handle what the second gen transmission could. I’ve towed WAYYYYY over its limits too many times and the truck held just as strong when I traded it in as it did the very first time I towed with it.

I’ll share some pics of what I’ve towed with my 2015 Tacoma. I even towed a full size bobcat 70 mph on expressway from trussville to my house which is close to a 2 hour drive. Also wish I had a pic to share of the load I drove 867 miles one way to a town just 90 minutes north of Miami Florida. Had a full size industrial dumpster made of solid steel, air compressor, guns, lumber, 7 squares of shingles, tar paper, vinyl siding, soffit, various guns and tools, and many other things required for the job. Granted mpg sucked big time but truck handled it no problem.

Don’t judge me on the cinder blocks and having a major squat to the truck :) that was third load of block I picked up in cullman about an hour and 10 min from my house and I hand loaded every load of block by myself two at a time. After second load of loading, driving home, unloading near job site.... I was a bit tired to reposition the block to be more centered on the trailer than have as much tongue wait as I did. Either way truck handled it just drove like a tank on the way home :)

Pretty sure I remember someone with a 2016 on here a few years ago towing a 3/4 ton Ford or Chevy on the freeway to an exit. Will it do it? Yes. Will Toyota have mercy on you during your warranty period if something happens? Not likely.

I second the other post in here that said put as much cargo in your boat as possible, let the trailer axle take on a bit more. I know how women are and your wife likely would rather not have to drive another car, although that seems like a reasonable way out for these trips since they are few and far in between. I'd lobby for that if you are really worried. A full sized truck would get you through situations like this but would be half the fun on everything else! Keep the Tacoma.

But if the empty vehicle weighs 4425 and the GVWR is 5600 i don’t see how it can already take 300 pounds of people and a full tank of gas into consideration if 5600 is the max regardless. Maybe I am missing something.

I really appreciate everyone responding. I am very analytical when it comes to numbers and just want to make sure before I do something. At the end of the day I am impressed with this Tacoma

Weigh the truck with only you and a full tank of gas. That will be your base weight. Subtract that from 5600 to know your actual remaining payload weight.

Since your so concerned about a few extra pounds I'm positively sure you won't forget to adjust your headlights.
