Tacoma Dash Cams

I'm trying to learn....is there a dashcam that mounts into the factory GoPro mount easily?

 

I have the Thinkware FS200 mounted into the factory GoPro for the front camera. I did have to buy a GoPro accessory kit and slightly modify the Thinkware mount to get them to work but it works out great to mount it out of the way. Just had to dremel out the center of the Thinkware mount slightly so the GoPro mounting bolt would fit through it. The factory GoPro mount is slightly off center of the windshield but it is in no way unusable, just bothers my OCD.

Not sure about others as my only experience is with the Thinkware. It has a setting while in parking mode to cut the camera off of the battery voltage hits whatever setting you choose. If I don’t start my truck for 3-4 days the camera will turn off and stop the parking mode but it has never had an ill effect on my battery. I’ve been running this same front and rear camera set up for the last three Tacomas and couldn’t be happier with what I got for the price.

I'll need to figure out a hardwire fuse tap solution, because my arb twin and auxbeam ar-800 are utilizing fuse taps too.

Never thought of that! But even then, if a passenger is using your phone, then it'll still show as being in use.

 

Does it have a parking mode?

My 17 doesn’t have that large housing behind the mirror so is guess it won’t work .

 

Probably not because you dont have a powered mirror either, do you?

 

My 17 mirror has the compass and auto-dim button no ADAS stuff….I’ll check out their site to see if they have options for mine.


Can it pick up license plates?
Running wires to the rear must be a pita.

 

You might pick up a plate if you were stopped at a light, but I dont think so while moving. It will pick up a recognizable face or animal (deer) on the side of the road (or dashing out in front of you) at night, though.

If you have a powered mirror are you sure you dont have that cover in front of your mirror? That is where the kit provides you the plug in for the power for the Fitcam....at least on mine!

The ease of install got me interested…I have enough stuff sitting in mod-limbo waiting to be installed!!



The 2017 doesn’t have that big cover, no TSS or ADAS stuff….I think it all started in 2018 on.

 

Why do some models have this giant housing behind the mirror? What's in there?

I attached the mount for my NextBase 522 to the big TSS-housing instead of the window when I had the front window tint installed (had to wait a couple of days for the tint to set). Should have from the start because I can use a less-permanent tape (Alien Tape) and the sun does not heat the inside of that console like it does heat the window glass.
