Older diesels puking black soot, that’s annoying for sure.
I have a 2014 vw tdi wagon, awesome car for commuting or road trips, go a long ways on a tank of diesel plus 140hp gets you 236 ft/lbs torque.

Wanting new tech just for the sake of new tech is a bit nonsensical. When you compare the list of pros and cons for drums and discs, and then you look at what the engineers were tasked with building, you see why they chose drums.

Stopping distance is not going to change much by putting on disc brakes, because the bulk of your stopping power is already biased towards the front. What drum brakes get you that you lose with disc brakes, is a brake that operates in a wider range of conditions without issues. Disc brakes exposed to debris get fouled by it, damaged by it, and especially with water, warped by it if they're hot. Drum brakes don't suffer this same issue, for the most part. For a vehicle that's designed to be off-road, in mud and sand and dirt and water, this is a very good reason to have drums.

Other trucks gave up their drums because their designers know that very few people are going to be taking a Frontier, Colorado, or Ridgeline off pavement. For those engineers, they didn't have a box to check that specified durability in rough environments. The Tacoma/Hilux does.

I don't get this hate on drum brakes. I've had vehicles with 300k+ on them and the drum brakes were untouched and never gave me issues. I would rather sacrifice a little bit of performance in the name of reliability. I guess that is why I bought a Tacoma instead of an F-150 EcoBoost to begin with.

Not sure where you live, but in CO diesel is .10 cents more than 85 octane.

Not only are they not gonna give you a diesel, they are gonna take away 2 cylinders from the engine and might even make you plug it in!!!!

If there’s little difference in stopping distance, and all your arguments are true, then why not have drum brakes for the front? According to your theory, seems it would be even more imperative up front to avoid all that vulnerability.

You also left out the fact that if drums get dirt/debris/mud in them, they have to be partially disassembled to clean them out properly.

Something tells me the Tacoma and Tundra will be the last vehicles in Toyota's fleet to go hybrid or full electric

Thats a full size though. Most turbo4 diesels are dogs. Totally gutless, and thats before you add the US emissions.

I had a BMW X3 that was a diesel. I loved that car. I was getting 35 to 38 miles per gallon. Great car. We were at a point where it looked like diesel could make it. Then the VW cheating scandal and that was the end of it.

Also, not to be discounted was the long term maintenance cost. Paid the car off. It was in great shape. Just out of warrant so I visited the BMW dealer and asked for the bumper to bumper extended BMW warranty (all maintenance, etc.). The cost was well over $6K. I asked them about Diesel engines being reliable and they said it was all about the sensors. They diesels sensors all go and they are a bloody fortune for the parts and an arm and a leg to install them.

That's when the diesel died for me ... as much as the mileage is great, it is over for mass market cars. VHS killed off Beta and electric killed off diesel.

It is what it is ...

I bet we see a Hybrid in the new Tundra if not upon introduction within a year or so, I bet the Tacoma gets a Hybrid and a 4 cylinder turbo standard with the initial launch of the next gen.
