From my experience older fords were pretty stout. My ranger was as reliable as any Tacoma. My buddies also had great experiences with older fords.

The newer fords, meh. My ex’s ecoboost escape needed engine replacement at like 25k miles. If I was to buy a Ford, it definitely would be with a 5.0 coyote. I actually wanted to get a 4x4 AC Fx4 but no MT offered, otherwise I would’ve been chilling at Ford forums right now.:)

Don't know much about brakes, I take it.

Front brakes have different requirements. Most of a vehicle's braking power comes from the front brakes. This is a product of momentum and the resulting weight transfer forward. You can feel it during braking as the friont of the vehicle squats down. You can really tell the difference on a bicycle; apply the same amount of force on the front brake as the rear and you'll go over the handlebars.

Why does this matter for front brakes? It means they end up doing most of the work, especially in front heavy vehicles. So they are usually sized larger than rear brakes. Larger rotor, larger caliper, larger pads for more surface area to grip. That also generates a lot of heat, which needs to be transferred away. Disc brakes are much easier to cool passively with airflow. A lot of engineering goes into race cars to direct airflow into the brakes to avoid brake fade. Drum brakes build up heat inside the drum, and it takes longer to bleed away.

One more thing: the air coming into the front brakes is, on the whole, 'cleaner' than the air going past the rear. Even just accounting for just the dust and debris being kicked up by your own vehicle, the rear brakes have to contend with all of the dust and debris kicked up by your own vehicle, and the front brakes don't.

Ok, so all arguments in favor of discs at the front. Better stopping power, better heat dissipation, don't have to contend with the same amount of fine particulate debris intrusion.

So many of those arguments don't matter so much for rear brakes, for the truck's design purpose. Tacomas aren't purely an off-road, vehicle. If they were, they'd have portal gear hubs to raise the ground clearance. They're multi-use vehicles, and Toyota engineers made compromises based on the truck's most popular use cases, alongside some more pragmatic considerations like cost. Drum brakes at the rear make sense because the rear brakes weren't intended to be under heavy load, and thus need to shed heat. They don't need to be big and meaty to stop the vehicle. They do need to keep out dust and fine debris, because Tacoma drivers are more willing to drive in places where it's dusty and dirty, than other truck drivers.

So yes, drum brakes fit the bill better than discs.

All engineering is compromises. Weight, reliability, power, cost, complexity. Toyota's engineers had to make a decision based on a lot of factors. I think they made the right decision. Drum brakes are proven to be reliable, durable, and suitable to the needs of the truck. I've had 4 Toyota trucks now, and across 650,000 miles I've only ever had to put on a single set of rear brakes, on a truck with 280k miles. I've never had to disassemble the drum to clean anything out, and I've lived all my life on gravel roads.

    Feel better about yourself now?
Too bad you weren’t astute enough to pick up on the sarcasm. I wasn’t seriously suggesting that drums be put on all four wheels. Great dissertation on brake theory and application, but I think we can all generally agree that it is done primarily as a cost savings measure on Toyota’s part.

Here’s some food for thought, EPA regulations are so bad caterpillar quit making semi engines... think about the billions they lost.

People that buy diesels are usually towing heavy shit.

Having a diesel is straight up pointless in a tacoma.

I certainly like older, well built. Fords. Too much plastic nowadays. Tupperware automobiles.

People love busting Fords balls about reliability but my buddy has a Ford F-150 for a work truck, put on over 200k miles last few years, he's done nothing but oil changes to it with no issues, my wife's car is a 2016 Ford, zero issues in almost 5 years of ownership. That said I'm driving my Tacoma with no plans to ever get rid of it.

Just like the Dodge / Cummins issues of old, once a rep gets established, it takes literally forever to rewrite your future.

Diesel equals DEF, DPF, SCR, Equals Limp Home Mode at the worst time, weather and at the furthest geographical vector from home and competent Dealership service department.

I'd venture to say only a small fraction of people delete their late model diesel truck anymore. It's sure talked about a lot like we're still in the early 6.0 and 6.4 days.

The 6.7 powerstokes in the company fleet have been dead balls reliable and have no deletes. IMO the delete stuff is just saying hey punch my anal v-card if you get caught in some states or if you're running DOT reg

265/75R16 Wildpeak AT3W, Softopper, Kicker speakers, shift knob, Ventvisors, Tint, Husky Weatherbeaters, Hondo Garage radio knobs. The to do list: Bilstein 6112/5160, 3 leaf add-a-leafs, lights, alu skid, PRP seat covers...
I'm pretty sure in 2019 or 2020 the EPA made it where its illegal for you to pass inspection in any state if your truck has been deleted. Whatever the fine is it must be not worth the risk because there have been local diesel shops that have restructured and will not delete trucks anymore. I remember my buddy has a '99 F350 with a 7.3L and was laughing cause the pre-DEF trucks jumped like $6-8k overnight when it got passed.

    edit: https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2020-12/documents/tamperinganddefeatdevices-enfalert.pdf

I think AFE removed most of their delete parts and what is left is strictly marketed for off road use.
