I'm looking for a decent roof rack to haul a 60 lbs canoe. I have all the brackets and tie downs for the canoe but need rails and cross bars for the roof. What do people like? I don't want something cheap that will fall apart but I don't want to spend $800 either.

I installed the OEM racks on my '11 just after I bought it new. Install was easy and the cost was way less than $ 800. The "best" thing about them is they fold into a slot when not in use so they are oriented front to back. No wind noise, no wind resistance and are always available for use by unfolding. I carry my canoe on top without issue.
If I were doing it now, I would check with a junkyard as (on occasion) drivers kill their Tacomas in wrecks. If it is not a roll over then rack should be fine.

OEM works well. Advantage being that you can fold the bars back when not in use and there is no wind noise.

Installed a “red rock roof rack.”
Yes it has many names but the CAD drawing is the same.
Holds up very nice with me standing on it and holds 5pcs of shed 40 20ft steel pipe quite well.

Yes it’s cheaper than prinsu or other brands. But I just don’t understand the “overlanding markup”.

Only downside is that I feel that there is a plane following me everywhere I go past 70kph.

I've the redrock, HD roof rack and that is better than the design you have you can adjust the front fairing a bit, but yes at 70mph, before i got it lined up sounded like a plane! and gave the worst vibration..

OEM is flimsy plastic overpriced garbage but if it works for you it works for you.

my Hooke road did have wind noise and reduced aerodynamics. I hope Prinsu and Sherpa are slightly better. Dropping the headliner to put insulation probably helps.

I wonder if it’s worth spending the extra money on Sherpa or Prinsu to be one and done right the first time. Especially if they have shell racks to match.

because that red rock looks like a marked up price Hooke and only slightly better. Especially if you already had aforementioned issues with it

in fact those blue truck pics look exactly like a Hooke
Which doesn’t extend far back either

That link shows that they are discontinued, but thats exactly the kind of thing I am looking for. Do you know of anywhere other than Amazon that may have them? Thanks.

I just checked it and for me it says 1 left in stock.

That said, I got mine from Desert Rat Off Road. Looks to be same price and free shipping.

Got a used oem thanks to Geeves77. I had a bit of trouble getting the drivers side on I think because the curve had straightened out a bit and the holes did not line up until I leaned heavily on the back edge of the rack. They look great and I love the swinging cross bars. Psyched to get my new canoe up to our camp in Ontario. Thanks to all.

OEM order from McGeorge Toyota and usually ships same day best online prices.
Amazon or eBay all have many clones about $100 but lower quality from posts.
All have a 160 lb max load so as long as you tie that canoe down to front end and rear end wind should be handled - don't drive at 80mph.

i use the Thule brackets and straps and a pair of the ratcheting tie downs on both the front and back of the canoe to stabilize the ends from shifting side to side. The quick release ratcheting tie downs make getting into the hatch or tailgate a breeze.
