I've always wondered about doing launches in 4wd... is it advisable? Owners manual advises against going over (65?) in 4wd but isn't shifting back to 2wd under load like in a drag race going to do damage as well? Seems like a lose lose situation

That's a good question and one I'd like more info on as well.

For me living 175 miles from the track I'd probably go once, make a couple of passes and then no need to return.

So what's the deal with shifting from 4x4 to 2wd while accelerating? I remember learning about werty a few years ago and how he was kicking some ass at the strip by doing this. I gave it a try under very mild acceleration and it did not sound or feel good doing so. Haven't done it since

He did. Every time. I did in my manual.

This isn't the thread to keep going off track though.

Have you ever ridden a multi-speed bicycle up a hill, and tried shifting while pedaling hard?
Same shit. Don’t wanna go 4wd-2wd/2wd-4wd while gassing it.

Now, leaving it in 4wd, and doing some runs down the drag strip is fine.

Well it's being done by some of the fastest tacomas on here, so that's why I was wondering if there was a trick to it. Cause when I tried it clunked out of 4wd hard and I was barely on the gas.

    Well, there you go then.
I’ve never done it on my truck, but I have tried it on my old Tacoma, and 4 runner. Those were manual levers for the transfer case, though.

Didn’t even consider that our trucks engage electronically, until now.

I guess my previous comment means jack-shit, now lol.

I get leaving it in until past the timing beams, but I'd sure want to click it back into 2wd prior to the hard left hand at the end of the track. I'd probably stop the truck and make sure it's out of 4wd before going around that sweeper, constituting a major holdup at the track as they wonder what in the heck I'm doing down there, unless I could verify it's actually clicked out of 4wd.

Sorry if we've wandered off track. I think we'd rather be discussing the wondrous results of what our new tuners have done for us. Just a wee little problem with that ongoing discussion...Italians taking more breaks to tune their ferraris and Lamborghini's today instead of our unworthy tacos. Coal in the stocking for those boys!

And as for Torspd...are you sure you're buds with SW? He's not one of those "friends" posting he "hates you" is he? Too much boredom on the board here waiting on a tune..hahaha...cmon Santa.

    Different guy.

He didn't shift out of it until somewhere between 3rd and 4th. If I remember correctly. He manually shifted his auto, as that was the only way to have the 6200 rpm rev limit.

Gotcha. So much love floating around the boards this time of the year, that it's hard for me to keep track...
I'm thinking if I could hit 13.8-13.9 but most importantly somewhere around 96-97 mph my goal would be reached and I'm done at the track. I'm just looking for a couple of solid passes with a minimum of spinning to accomplish that without doing any damage to the truck. If it will slip out of 4wd before having to go around the turn to exit that would be peachy.

Would one dare set his shift points at 6000 for the auto trans? I was thinking of just adding another 200 rpm to the shift points and getting rid of the speed limiter or at least bumping it up to 120-130 mph. Heck the tires are not even rated for that.

    It’s 6:30am in California.
