I am doing an engine and transmission swap. I want to take a 1996 Toyota Tacoma 2.7 with automatic transmission and put it into a 2001 Toyota Tacoma that had a 2.7 straight gear. I'm trying to find out if the 1996 set up including the wiring harness and computer will work.
I am wanting to put a 2.7 liter engine, automatic transmission, wiring harness and computer out of a 1996 Toyota Tacoma into a 2001 that had a straight gear. Does anyone know if this will work?

Like any swap you will have to merge the engine harness to the cab harness unless your planning to swap the entire wiring harness from 96 into the 2001

There are always going to be little problems on any swap that come up

If your looking to hear this is going to be plug and play most likely not but like anything else it can be done

You will likely have to swap everything. The '96 motor will have a distributor, while the 2001 will be a coil over plug setup. So expect to have to swap all of the wiring and some other bits as well to make it work.

On the transmissions, your speed sensor will be electronic on the 2001, while the '96 will be cable driven. I'm not sure how that will work. I've put the transmission from a 2001 into a '96 before and made it work by using the speed sensor off the '96, but I don't know if it will work the other way around because the '96 ECU and wiring will not be set up for an electronic speed sensor. You might have to run a speedo cable.
