Anyone done or considered this? Which pickup would you chose?

Because Toyota makes good motors, but not the best frames considering how many issues with rust there are... Maybe other pickups have better frame designs to mitigate this...?

While the Taco hardware is excellent, there is no way to do an easy swap without an ultra pricey standalone ECU. I've hear that a $10k Motec unit exists. Full nope.

Trying to do a swap in or out of the 3rd Gen is going to be an exercise in frustration.

They all rust if they aren't maintained.

With rustproofing and some general maintenance 3rd gens Will be just fine. It would be a general pain in the ass and a massive amount of work that would do nothing but devalue the truck you swap the motor into. If you’re looking to swap it into a classic truck, get an LS motor and have a better motor platform for 1/4 the cost.

I think you might have too much faith in internet lore.

Because of that? It would be infinitely easier to deal with or maintain the frame, IMHO.

Given that our area has stupidly gone to salt in the winter, this will be my solution:
    https://www.woolwaxusa.com/Woolwax®-Undercoat-Kit-4-Quarts-PRO-GUN-with-2-Extension-wands_p_42.html

Given the cheap price for the number of applications there, this is the easy route.

All trucks have rust issues in the rust belt, but toyota was the only one to admit it and replace frames well past the warranty expiration. The salt will melt any truck made of metal regardless of brand.

I lightly considered swapping a Lexus 2UR-GSE V8 into my 3rd gen, and then placing the 3.5 w 6 speed manual into an 89 - 95 generation vehicle. Already have enough on the plate, so it was voted down.

Why would you want to swap a mediocre motor into another body?

Toyota didn’t admit anything. They lost a class action suit, well several actually, and were ordered to make owners of those vehicles (Tacoma and Tundra) whole at great expense to the Corp. The amount that Toyota was awarded from suing Dana was a drop in the bucket compared to the ongoing cost of the frame rust campaign.

The lawsuit only covered 2005-2010 tacomas, yet they still did buyouts on first gens and are covering trucks up to 2016. So not really true.

The engine and transmission is the last thing I would choose to swap out of a third gen, they are the worst part of the truck.
