Toyota has reached out with a letter several years ago saying there is a warranty fix for a roof leak in my 2018 TRD offroad

Local dealer just sent me a letter saying I only have 1 year left to get the fix.. the Dealership is scummy AF so I doubt that's true..

My truck hasn't leaked so I don't see the point in ripping the roof out to fix something that isn't broken but was wondering if anybody here has heard of a "Deadline" on a Warranty fix before

It’s not a warranty thing it’s a service campaign. It’s Toyota noticing a problem and trying to correct it. If you refuse to have the work done and it leaks after the campaign is over then you will be stuck footing the bill and Toyota not liable for any damages. I would take it to get the replacement and have it done on their dime. There are a lot of problems with the light failing and causing big leaks which can cause mold damage.

Dealerships may be scummy but how is it to their advantage to send out such a letter and lie about a deadline, reminding you of the possibility of work that would be free to you, and isn’t exactly great money to them being warranty work?

many times, the point is to get the vehicle up on the lift(despite the warranty work not requiring under carriage access), which they then "throw the book" at the customer-- many/all consumables like bearings, plugs, belts, filters, and fluids will suddenly be "beyond" their service life, regardless of the vehicles actual condition or mileage.

that said, i would still recommend performing the work-- though it should be noted you can visit any toyota dealer anywhere, you're not locked to any specific dealer for warranty work.

mine had leaked, and despite me constantly checking it, i never saw water near it.

what finally gave me notice that it was leaking was never visible water drops, but water drop streaks down the rear window. someone that either keeps their windows cleaner than i do, or pays less attention, could easily miss those signs until water starts pooling in the interior, and creates a mold issue.

That would be a couple levels up the scummy ladder

I probably just have dealers with more morals near me that’s all. But I believe any shadiness is possible

They don't rip anything about.. they slap a new seal over it and call it a day.

Just got my letter too. Funny because I did the service campaign just the other day and then the letter hit.

Thanks all I read it as a warranty issue not an extended service campaign. I'll look deeper into it and see how much they have to open up to get to the seal and make a decision then. I don't have an issue now and from what I have read not everyone does.

When I brought my '19 in for the service campaign the service writer I always used told me that it was a recall even though they weren't calling it a recall. My guess is that once it's called a recall, federal regulations kick in and they have to do more "outreach" to get in touch with owners.

Either way, if Toyota says they'll replace something for free, then I'm going to get it replaced for free. I don't care what they call it. If they sent me an email that said we'll jack up your radiator cap and put a new Tacoma under it, I'd do it. ;)
