    I have to agree.

I've been holding back on my thoughts on this, but this thread prompted me to comment.

    2021 TRD Sport AT DC

The transmission/shifting in this truck is simply a huge failure by Toyota. I have not ever driven a vehicle that was this bad before, and heard so many common complaints. The reason the truck does everything else so well, and there really aren't any other options I like in a mid-size truck, is the only thing that keeps me in this Tacoma. I really hate driving it sometimes. Yes I test drove it before buying blah blah, but it's not something you really realize is as big a problem as it is until you live with the truck for a bit.

I did the OTT tune, and honestly I have to say it did not fix the issues we are talking about here. Sure the gas pedal is a little more responsive in some situations, but the shift points still are terrible. It is pretty much a reflex now that I just put the truck in S4 every time I drive it. Forget expecting the truck to hold D5 or D6 unless it's down hill with a tailwind. Cruise control on the highway in D? What a joke. The truck just cannot decide what gear to be in.

It's also the lower-speed coming out of a corner stepping on the gas hesitation that sucks. It's like you press the gas pedal and the AT forgets it's in too-tall of a gear and has to think about it for a while before downshifting to the right gear.

I have, but I still feel it's a huge Toyota fail for not fixing the issue! S mode and the ECT button pretty much eliminates the issue on my rig...

My 22 sr5 has never had any gear hunting issues like many others have. Cruise control on the highways no problem either unless there's a strong headwind. But sometimes when I need to punch the gas to pass and get around someone, it hesitates longer than you would expect and then suddenly rockets to the redline and takes off like a bat out of hell. I'm used to it now and expect it, but it could definitely be dangerous if the driver isn't prepared.

Normal city driving the truck clearly hangs out in a high gear and low rpms and gets annoying sometimes because it will take forever to get up to speed on its own unless I give it some extra gas and get it to downshift and accelerate.

I’ve had this same issue with my ‘16, ‘17, and occasionally on my ‘23….the ‘16 and ‘17 got tunes since they both had my vagabond and 10 ply tires. The ‘23 just has a topper and load range c tires so I haven’t gotten it tuned….yet….though I do see similar (albeit less extreme) issues with the shift points from Toyota. Best I can describe what you are talking about is “lurching”.

I do noticed the funny shift points and gear hunting for sure. But what I'm referring to is a throttle/acceleration issue. Coming out of a stop the truck will just bog like if it was sucking air, it doesn't even rev up no matter if I press the pedal all the way or even pump it. I have no vacuum leaks, my MAF is clean, no CEL. At this point I just don't know if it might the the fuel pump (which I doubt considering the truck starts right away)

If my truck felt anything like some of you describe, it would be traded in for something else that day. Life is too short.

My Tacoma drives as normal as one can imagine in terms of shift points, throttle response and overall performance.

The only times it shows unacceptable performance is cruise control on steep high speed mountain passes where I primarily use the truck to get to camping/hunting/fishing spots.
Thats it. Not a deal breaker for me.

Only Mods I have are steel rock sliders /camper shell/trd pro wheels

Tbf mine will "buck" a few times on WOT untill about 4k RPM, then it launches.

Seems to do it around 3100 and 3600 rpm before "pulling" at 4k

No CEL here, and I'm tuned lol

Good post....ECT will also eliminate what you describe.

Agree 100% and the point you make "when you attempt to accelerate is ridiculous and can be dangerous"

    I have the same issue.
When coming of a "rolling stop" as in a merge, when I hit the loud pedal the truck just sits there for several seconds.
I've almost been clipped several times because of it.

Its weird, I noticed sometimes it starts doing it and after driving a bit at highway speeds seems to ease the problem whenever a stop and go again

Any updates on this? My ‘23 has done this a few times now

**And no, an OTT tune did NOT fix the booooooog.

Try two tanks of higher octane. Mine performs night and day better on 93 octane vs 87. I know nobody wants this to be the answer. I don’t like it either. OTT tune helped mine a little bit but not much.

All 3rd gen AT do it.

Even the ones who claim their truck doesn't do it ;)

There is no fix for it

Manuals do too, unless you shift at 3000 rpm.

I live at elevation and ran 85 in my 2016 with zero issues for 150k miles until it got totaled by a DD. In my 2023 I run 87 and it definitely seems much better ‘tuned’, for lack of better words.

    Hope the anecdote helps lol

So this isn’t the little minor hesitation. This is a huge bog as in pull away from a stoplight or a stop sign and it bogs and actually does not go anywhere for like 10 seconds.

Premium does not do anything for it because that’s what I run if aim not getting the 90 octane ethanol free.
