Looking for a tacoma within my budget which is around 15k. But i see alot of tacomas with high mileage 250k or more. Is that something i should be worried about when it comes too reliability? Any opinions would be awesome.

The Tacoma is a very reliable truck and with regular maintenance, it can rack up to 300K miles or more.
    Good luck on your quest.

If you’re the original owner, 250k miles is nothing for our trucks. If you’re not, it’s a total gamble based on how that previous owner took care of it

I have 226,000 miles on my 2007. I'd drive it cross country tomorrow. But I wouldn't pay $15K for an unknown truck with 150K on it. Certainly not 250K.

According to KBB my truck is worth $8 to $10K. I have some peeling paint issues, but otherwise is in great mechanical condition. I might pay somewhere under $10K for one with 200,000 miles on it if I intended it for local daily driving. Probably not something I'd trust for long trips. Chances are good major components like the engine and transmission will go 400,000 miles.

But after 200,000 you start seeing lots of little thing needing replacement. And that is to be expected. That is about the time you see U-Joints, wheel bearings, AC compressors, alternators, and other parts start to reach the end of their life expectancy. If one of those fails locally it is a lot less hassle than on the side of the road 500 miles from home.

    Good point.
Try to find a one owner truck. The original owner usually takes better care of their stuff. Also get the care fax

Great truck. Can run a really long time. But just like Marshall said….it’s how the truck was taken care off. If they neglected it with the proper Maintenance, could be an issue. If they were jumping curbs with it, most likely an issue.

but then at the same time, 250k miles is when a bunch of little things get to end of their life. Like i joints, starter, bearings, the window seals, bushings.

biggest issue for these trucks is rust on the frames. Get under the truck and look around for rust.

I mean there was a thread on here a month ago of someone getting their Tacoma stuck in water, they ripped out everything and dried it. That wouldn’t show up on a carfax report.

Each Tacoma needs to be judged on the merits of that Truck!

Some can be trashed at 50,000 miles just run into the ground others a valued family member and given the best care still going strong well over a 1/4 million miles.

Buying any used vehicle is a gamble. I currently have 312k on my 14. I got away with just oil and tires until 220k. After that I ended up redoing front end and suspension, brakes all around. rear axle seals, heater/blower with connector, front wheel bearings, steering rack. alternator, battery. Next week I am getting a bushing for needle bearing installed. Today I changed my plugs, cleaned my throttle body and added a pint of Techron. Last weekend changed the oil and fluid in front and rear diff. I should be good for another 100k. High milage vehicles can nickel and dime you but if you do some of the work yourself and buy parts online you can save a ton. For instance, 3 weeks ago, I went to a salvage yard and picked up new front seats for around 300 bucks. Then at same scrap yard I have a request for a JBL head unit with cameras.

How often do you change your plugs.
I will admit. I don’t do it as often as I probably should.

Another thing to think about with a higher mileage vehicle: What kind of parts did the previous owner(s) install when they replaced stuff that wore out? OEM parts are generally far superior to aftermarket parts when it comes to longevity - but they cost more. This - and the belief that all parts are the same - leads many people to cheap out when they replace things. In the long run though, it just makes the vehicle less reliable in the future.

So in summation of all the accurate responses you've had so far......

    Maybe.

Best of luck in your search!

Kind in mind to many people a Tacoma is just another vehicle that goes to Quicky Mart auto repair in most cases having no control over what parts are used.

Agreed, but many of us have 100% control over what goes into our trucks. Other than lighting upgrades, my Tacoma was 100% OEM parts - even on things that got replaced - when I sold it after 7 years with 114,000 miles on it. The buyer got one sweet truck and he paid dearly for it.

You pay now or you pay later.

I bought my one-owner '06 TRD OR knowing that there was work to be done. I only wanted to write a check for a certain amount and decided I was willing to make an annual payment for a few years until I had all the needed work done. So I bought a $20k truck for $15k and made an additional $5k in maintenance, upgrade, proactive, mod work over the next couple of years. So I wound up with an excellent maintained truck with my cash outlay spread over a couple of years. Sure I could have just found the $20k truck with less work to be done but this method worked out for me.
