The pressure exerted horizontally by a contained fluid isn't nearly as great as the downward pressure.

Think of an above ground pool, or heck even a baby pool. They're pretty much glorified garbage bags.

I agree, not the most responsible of choices, but I'd think the sides would be fine.

    Bumped for physics.

That was something I was wondering about as well, and now it totally makes sense.

The total horizontal pressure on a 5' wide x 1.5' tall area would be around 107 lbs spread over the entire surface. I'd say you weren't in danger of screwing up the sides, front, or tailgate. However bets are off as far as the load on the frame / axle / springs / receiver. None of that stuff was ever designed to hold that amount of weight.

And look at what happens when those specifically designed "garbage bags" get poked or kinked- They fail pretty bad.
After hearing stories of folks collapsing/folding their tailgates with a 300 lbs dirtbike...NOT a component I would want to trust to hold much weight at all...specially not to just horse around.

How did you get the 107 lbs over the entire surface number?? (I'm not a fluids engineer so I have no idea what that calc would look like)

And you are right about the axle and frame/receiver. REciever is made to PULL 6500lbs (best case) with a tongue weight less than 600 lbs DOWN. Put a jack under it and press that force UP...That's a lot of force in the wrong direction.

is there a better place to put the jack to help hold the weight better?

Jack stands under the frame to remove the loading from the suspension is a good start...but I can't even promise you that'll prevent damage...

I've looked but it may have not been noted. The weight of all this seems to be an issue. Just how many gallons of water did this take?

Number of gallons x 8.35 = total weight.

Forgive me if this has been addressed.

so if most of the weight is on the jacks on the frame and off of the suspension/ axles/ etc the only thing left to worry about is the bed correct? and how strong exactly is that bed? from my math it doesnt seem like that much weight/ sq in.

length of the bed * width of the bed= bed surface area of bottom

    so 54in*73.5in=3969sq in (26.7sq ft)

then i divide weight of all the water by the surface area of bed to get lbs/sq ft correct?

which ends up being 101lbs/sq ft.

thats less than me standing on one foot in the bed.

    so 3969sq in/2700lbs

Well, is the bottom of the bed bowing in at all? If you look under your truck does it look like the bottom of the bed is bending or being stressed at all?

I think you'll more or less be fine because you're not driving the load anywhere. Hitting a speed bump with that will definitely not be good.

Take a picture of your wheel well and/or suspension. Are you riding on bump stops?

Seems some people are over looking a few things. The payload cap is determind by Suspension, axel, frame, BED, etc. With almost 300# of water in the bed, as Brunes mentioned, Axels seals can get messed up. Also, The bed wasnt designed to hold that much weight. That can stress the mounting points. And then, You take into account what the frame was designed to handle. If the bed was on a surface in which the weight was evenly transfered supporting it, It may work fine. But its not. A Ladder assembly with 6 mounting points supports the load in the bed. 3000# into 6 mounting points can transfer enough pressure to the mounts, and frame, to compromise its integrity.

Now lets see how much of the weight is sopported by the 6 bed mounts having only 2 sq inches of surface area?
