I never understood why people would want a truck with a 5 foot bed

I don’t. I hate it, but I wanted a first gen and a double cab. Didn’t have another option. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t jealous of the 3rd gen DCLB TRD offroad option. Just hate how wide the 2nd and 3rd gens are.

They’re more like a 1st Gen Tundra size wise. I drive a Chev half ton ext cab for work, and it’s a relief to get back in my DCLB at the end of the day. The half ton is noticeably harder to park and stuff even with almost the same wheelbase as my 3rd Gen.

Make the jump ! You won’t regret it haha. They’re still a pretty basic truck interior wise compared to a lot of other manufacturers these days. It took a long while for it to grow on me coming from an 07’ Taco but I love it now.

Try maneuvering this thing through a parking lot and then you'd be grateful to just have the Tacoma...

I’m not interested one bit in making the jump to a 2nd or 3rd gen. I’ve driven both of them and I like them a lot, my first gen is for me though. Maybe sometime in my life I’ll change my mind.

I'm reminded how small the 3rd gen Tacoma is every time I go to park anywhere in public where there are other trucks in the parking lot :-/

Turns out it doesn't matter. I found a sweet reg Cab parked on the street and the guy gladly took my $6,000 for it. It makes a squeeky noise when I hit bumps but I can park this thing Anywhere! He said it has some kind of special paint job.

Looks like a Bob Ross painting, what did you photograph this with, a hammer/chisel and a piece of stone?

    Working on it ...
Yup. I was looking used and ended up going new for ~5k more.

Going from a ‘88 SR5 and two 2nd Gen Tacomas over the last 30+ years, the first time I got into a 3rd Gen I was like, “Holy Crap ... this is a lot of truck”.

DCLB. Got used to pretty quickly and like it a lot. Gauging parking is still not perfect. I’m either sticking out up front or rear is still in the spot behind me.

The size difference is huge between the pickup and the Tacoma! I don't think it is hard to drive the Tacoma, but I don't think I could backup without the backup camera.

Because I was still able to get a MT, it has a full 4 door cab for people and/or my dog who is with me just about every day, the small bed can still haul small loads and I have 2 different trailers to choose from that can haul as much as I need to. It’s easy to park, is more of a truck than most people that have full-sized ones even need, and the 4 door long beds look disproportionate.

I use my truck at the tree farm I run as a side gig and it’s plenty of truck most of the time I have loaded the “small” bed with 1200 pounds of bagged fertilizer and it handled it with no issues. On occasion I need an f550 or a semi but to drive one every day because I need it once in a while would be stupid. Unfortunately most Americans need the biggest vehicles they can get their mitts on. I downsized from a full size truck because driving one everyday is excessive and just not necessary.

I have the off road dclb. It’s long, not wide. Hard to park, but appreciate the space when I make depot runs.

Some of us need trucks for work. I like the tacoma for being light off road, but I do struggle with its ability to pull its weight as a serious work truck.

As a contractor who uses his DCSB as a work truck I have no issues. I miss my full size sometimes, but I make it work. Certainly there are compromises that have to be made though.

I hear this argument all the time and it makes me wonder.... How on earth does almost every other country do the work that we do in the US without giant diesel pickups or tow mirrors flipped out for the invisible ghost trailer that must be behind them. (I’m looking at you, Dodge owners) Majority of the time the work that full size pickups are doing is going to the grocery store or hailing fishing poles (for most people) very few actually NEED a full size truck every single day. They are just convenient because there is a lot of space and convenience is more important to most people than sustainability. The size of our vehicles in the US is a large part of why insurance is so crazy too. They are huge and heavy and have plenty of tech to distract the driver.
