Hey all looking at buying a 2006 Tacoma with 250K miles. Has been owned by my father for about 5 years now but still have questions. I have two main concerns. One I am receiving a code regarding the camshaft which of course is concerning. Also it appears to have a decent oil leak down near dipstick, kinda behind it. Going to try to clean it and address where it’s coming from but wanted any advice. Thanks!

Camshaft position sensor? Everything I've read says it's a relatively easy fix.

It actually is a code for the sensor and it also threw a code stating the timing is over-retarded for bank 2 I believe.

Take it to a shop and spend the $175-200 for a pre purchase inspection. Please. Zero disrespect to Pops. This is a *business decision* in your benefit.

Nobody is looking out for you, but you.
    ------------
250k miles is a lot. 20 yr old truck. Buyer beware!
    --------------

    Earth to everyone:
A CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR TROUBLE CODE MIGHT ACTUALLY INDICATE SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE CAMSHAFT.

It drives me crazy when people suggest - without anymore information - to just replace the sensor and you'll be fine. It doesn't work like that.

    -----------

Depending on where you live, the importance of having the truck racked on a lift and inspected underneath cannot be overstated. That oil leak could be a timing cover leak. A well-known and common issue. Oil leaks can be lived with it. But if that is the original timing cover and the timing chain has never been replaced, then whoa. Slow down. Pump the brakes.

Any decent shop will be able to tell you if the truck is mechanically solid.

    --------

And, I never say this with ill will. But if you cannot afford the pre-purchase inspection, you cannot afford the truck.

    Make good financial decisions.

I absolutely agree with you Andy. While he is my father I don’t know anything about the previous owner or owners. Just because he took care of it does not mean they did. I thought it might be the valve cover gasket but after some digging it does appear to be the timing chain gasket (I think that is) not 100%. My transmission just blew on my 2017 Silverado so he offered his up to me and cut my losses with the Silverado. Haven’t made a decision yet but trying to consider all possibilities and outcomes before I do.

    WAY TO GEAUX!

Make good choices. I loved my Dad. But he didn't know a darn thing about cars. LOL.

My father has rebuilt multiple engines that being said I’m always nervous about vehicles. Especially 20 year old ones lol. Just want to make sure it’ll get me where I need to be for the next 100K miles or so until I buy new.
