So i just bought my 2nd tacoma which only came with a valet key. Ive programmed a new key which works but the immobilizer light still blinks. Any idea if i can program it to be the master key? Will i need a new key that isnt programmed yet? The smart key maker didnt come with instructions..

Wow!! Went through the thread and the info is somewhat wrong. The original poster actually made the procedure harder. Its a lot easier. Update to your post that this only works on tacomas equipped with the 4D immobilizer ECU. You have this ECU if your keys have a small dot engraved on key blade. If you have a G engraved, move along. This will not work.

Great pictures and write up. I followed the original post but had all the challenges listed later in the thread. Security light flashing, could only program one key with the Keymaker, etc. This proceedure also caused my valet key to stop working.

This thread had the solution to the security light flashing. (Ignition to "ON" and back 10 times.)

The key programming answers were here for my 2005 Taco: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/238286-tacoma-key-programming-5.html

In summary, we can only have 2 masters and one valet key at a time. So, if you are using the Keymaker, you will want to follow neneago's instructions in the link above and also have your Valet Key on-hand so you can re-program that while registering your masters.

When I started this, I only had one really worn master and a good valet key. I used my worn master and the Keymaker to add another master. From there, I started the procedure over again, using neneago's instructions, to register another copy to my new master and also re-program my valet at the end. I now have two pristine masters and my original valet.

We're back in business! [IMG] Thanks all!

My 2010 had 2 masters and a valet and I had the dealer make and program 2 more copies.
    Has something changed since then?

There are newer versions of the system since my 2005 was made. (It is the 3rd generation smart key system and I understand there are newer versions. I'm not sure when/if they were upgraded on the Tacomas.)

Do your original keys and valet still work?

They worked right up to the minute I traded it in for a 2015 2 weeks ago.
I've got 2 keys cut that I need to get programmed. Will the system allow this?

So you have your original worn master, two new ones and a valet key? Can you explain how you were able to get the keymaker to work with more than one new master key? Thanks.

Sorry for the late reply. I had to dig up my notes.

Now, I have two new masters and my original valet key. My original master keys no longer work. (In the 2005 Taco, we can only have 2 masters and 1 valet at a time.)

To get to this point - I had to:
    1) Run the procedure using one old master (as the programming master) and one new master. (This deleted my old 2nd master.)
    2) Run the procedure again using the new master (as the programming master) and the second new master. (This deleted my old 1st master.)

Dear Toyota: The truck is great. This is stupid. You suck.

Here is the modified procedure that works on my 2005 Tacoma:

    Tacoma Key Programming
    ________________________________________
    Step 1: Acquire Key Blank (p/n 89785-08020)
    Step 2: Acquire Programmer

Visit ebay and search "toyota smart keymaker". you want to purchase "Toyota & LExus OBD2 Smart Key Maker Programmer"

    Step 3: Cut that key

    Step 4: Programming

Programming Step 1: Close all doors except driver’s door. Leave open during programming. Have all keys ready to use for the procedure.
The Tacoma will only accept two Master Keys and one Valet Key in the system at a time. This procedure will erase all keys in the memory except for the primary master used to kick off the process, so all keys need to be available.

Programming Step 2: Insert Original Master Key and turn to the on position (Must to past “ACCY” to “ON.”)

Programming Step 3: Insert SmarKeymaker into OBD Port

Programming Step 4: Wait for first beep. (1-15 seconds)

Programming Step 5: Wait for second beep, this will be 3 quick beeps identifying (3rd generation) (1-30 seconds after first beep)

Programming Step 6: Wait for the security light to come ON solid. (If you wait a long time, a final long beep may come from the Keymaker. This can be ingored.) This is a signal that the system is in programming mode. Take out the Keymaker.

Programming Step 7: Remove original key and reinsert, DO NOT TURN, wait until the security light comes ON again solid (< 5 seconds) and remove.

THEN insert the next Master Key, DO NOT TURN, wait until the security light comes ON again solid (< 5 seconds) and remove.

THEN insert the next Valey Key, DO NOT TURN, wait until the security light comes ON again solid (< 5 seconds) and remove.

Programming Step 8: The procedure is complete. Test all keys.

Is anyone aware why the geniuses at Toyota decided to make the 3rd gen (2005) Tacomas only accept a total of 3 programmed keys at a time? I consider all 3 'master keys' since my truck doesn't have any lockable boxes and the 'valet' key works the same as the masters do. If this was to help deter theft, all I see it doing is being a pain for owners who'd like and couple of extra keys to keep around just in case.

It makes absolutely no sense in the Tacoma. It does make sense for the cars where the electronics and key system originally came from.

Reuse of the system made the system less expensive so Toyota could make more profit and afford all the 20-30 recalls that they are putting us through.

If all else fails just cut the chip out of the old key and transfer is over to the next key.

On my 2005 Taco, ONLY 3 chipped keys will work to start the truck at one time.

    Hello all,

I recently purchased an 09 Tacoma, and was only given a single key from the previous owner (only key he had). After reading this thread, I ordered all of the required components to program some spares... then I realized the key that was given to me with the truck is a valet key.

Am I SOL for self-programming using this method?

Thanks for your input. I bought one of those smart keymakers from ebay for 17 bucks almost a year ago and couldnt understand the poorly translated chinese instructions. With your direction it took aprox. 2 minutes. Now my new used Taco has two working keys. Thanks to you.
