I have an extra key hidden on the truck. I used the key last week, it didn't work, the engine just cranked but didn't turn over. I find out the chip in the spare key went bad and must be re-programmed. I got to the toyota dealership, they say I need a new key at $300 plus. BSBSBSBSBSBSBS. Is there any alternative to the toyota key from the dealership. Whatever happened to simple keys?

Many locksmiths are equipped to reprogram the fobs for far less than the dealership. Also in my area there is almost always an ad on Craigslist about this and I saw a sign at my local ACE hardware store advertising replacement fobs, might check those options out.

    ?

Makes no sense to me that a bad key could even crank the engine. I thought a bad key kills the starter, not the spark. :notsure:

As noted a lot of locksmiths can do this. Plus there are mobile outfits that will come to your house and make a new key. If you already have a key, they might be willing to program it for you. If you do a search for "mobile key replacement", you should see a listing for shops in your area.

After I had my remote start installed, I went to a locksmith near me. He cut and programmed to "H" keys for me. I think it cost $135.00 for both keys.

Toyota OEM keys each have their own coding. What the dealership does is program the truck's ECU to recognize the key. (There's a limited number of keys that the ECU can recognize. I think it's something like 6 or 8.)

What a locksmith does is clone a key (aftermarket) to match one of your existing keys. This is not as good a solution as what the dealership does. I've had terrible luck with locksmiths duplicating keys.

Either that or download a copy of techstream and do it yourself.

I accidentally bent my spare key (M/T) so it only works in mechanical door locks and tail gate and will not start the truck. I had a lock smith make me a second key for $105cad that has no remote buttons but will open door locks and will start the truck.

On my old Fords I recall if you had 2 working keys you can program a 3rd yourself so technically if you just buy a chip key and have it cut at like Home Depot or someplace then you can get the ECU to recognize it with a weird Contra style up up down down kind of thing. Does Toyota have that?

Think I bought one off eBay for like 30 bucks and had it cut for 5.

Found this video - I'm sure you can find the one for a match for your key type

My truck does not have a FOB. No remote door locks, no remote start, no push-button start.
I need only one key to turn the tumblers in the door, tailgate, & ignition switch and it does have an embedded chip. It starts the truck.

I had another spare key cut to work the tumblers; but there is not any chip - thus the ignition will not fire when the starter motor turns over with that key. But it will turn over.
The dealer charged $4 to sell & cut the non-chip key. They want $300 to sell, cut, & program a key with a chip.

Most coded keys in my experience shut of the fuel injectors. When I worked at an autowrecker, if we didn't have the key, we would pipe propane into the intake to run the engines to assess them for resale.

yeah the $4 key is the one the Keyless entry people get to open doors and tailgate. just a key with no Chip.
like everyone said. local locksmith will make you a copy and program it for cheaper than a dealer. usually give a set.

right now i have a1 original keyless, the dummy non chip key and a aftermarket Keyless start key that i paid 95dollar to my locksmith. it work great 99% of the time, the 1% it fails and have to press a button to wake the key up

I got a key cut and chipped for my 2008 camry at a toyota dealership for $70.
He quoted me $450 to reprogram the key for all the doors.
I said I only need it for starting the car and manually unlocking the doors.
