These trucks can hold a lot of air. She hasn't said she's had to add ay coolant since she burped it real well (unless I missed it?). The air will cause it to run hot as well. It'll need burped again after R/R t-stat. Just not as extensive as before.

    OP,
Have you had to add coolant since you burped it well? If so, when & how much?

I thought I read her reservoir was empty after a short drive but I'll double check.

I would have to get back to you later today with the code, I believe it was a thermostat. I am still overheating after the 2nd thermostat change. I can see there is a leak because there is water spots all over that part of the engine but I cant find the leak. I have tried the pressure test, a dye test, burping the system with no success. I need help please!!!

I have been adding coolant and water like crazy... I have burped it a ton of times (after thermostat replacements and after every time I almost run out of fluids) until there are no bubbles with the heat on and without the heat on. How do I find a leak? It has to be it because the water splatter is everywhere. I will take pic when I get home and post it.

If you are asking if you can run without a thermostat, I will say that's a bad idea for a number of reasons. Years ago people would do that, but computer controlled cars don't do well w/o a functioning TStat.

A fault code for a thermostat, coolant everywhere, but you can't find a leak and thinking that you have had two defective thermostats out of the box leads me to believe that you do in fact need some help. Locate a reputable mechanic and take it there and have them troubleshoot and fix your issue. It may cost a little money, but at this point you are spinning your wheels for nothing.

Are you losing coolant JUST from the overflow?

If so as long as the radiator is always full it’s fine

OEM only for the t stat.

Take a bore scope down each cylinder. If the tops of the pistons don’t have at least some carbon. Chances are a blown head gasket. Clean pistons indicate water is getting in and steam cleaning the piston.

If you've got water/coolant dispersed all over engine and under hood, then the leak is in front of the fan somewhere. Radiator or where hose connects to radiator. I know you said the rad is new...but never know.
The leak is what's causing over heating. Not a thermostat. It would be pegged red and over flowing coolant into the resivoir if it was a thermostat. But since overflow is always empty, it's leaking, then over heating from lack of water. Stop listening to the thermostat police and find the leak.

Thermostat codes aren't always thermostat. I said HG earlier and I'll say it again.

Not sure of it has been checked, but when I replaced my thermostat in my corolla in bad to pull the radiator fan out. When going to work the next day there were no issues. On the way back I was stuck in traffic and temp gauge shot up. Pulled over and the plug to the fan easy full seated.

Summary, are your fans plugged in? If it only happens when younger stopped this may be an issue..

The Tacoma doesn't have electric fans for the radiator...

People keep saying HG, if there is visible water in the engine compartment I would be not. I'm thinking pinhole sized leak that only manifests itself when the system is pressurized by heat. May a fin in the radiator or a hose going to or from the radiator.
