I don’t know how else to spell it.

In the end this is a Tacoma forum. If you want more “objectivity”, perhaps you should try a 4Runner forum.

You are clearly infatuated with 4Runner. All the power to you. Go and be happy.

dude you can claim whatever you want, if you really think a 2018/2019 4runner is the creme of the crop techwise good for you. many will disagree.
I am only referencing what you asked and not comparing the 4runner to a tacoma.

Go sit in any other vehicle besides a toyota, it is a dinosaur and relic. Go sit in the rav4 2019/2020 then go to 4runner. I mean its night and day.

The rav4 is modern, the 4runner is not.

Yeah build quality on the T4R is awesome. It's all in the details that you don't notice at first glance. But look more closely and the difference is amazing.

Tech - outdated display console looking like a gameboy. Ingenious "tire direction display" lol. No backup sensors or BSM (in the one i drove) or automatic lift/close for the tailgate. No HIDs or LED lighting. No external cameras aside from back up. I'm not just talking about comparing it to the tacoma, I'm comparing it to other vehicles that people cross shop for like the acura rdx.

Mpgs? Go on any 4runner forum and see if anyone is getting 20-22 combined, especially with mods. I drove mine mainly city with a few highway miles and 16mpg was combined. Right now with a lift, front/rear high clearance bumpers, sliders and 285s I got 19.4 on the freeway, and 17 city.

I'm not saying it's a bad vehicle. It's great, but for what it does (SUV) I'd take my money elsewhere, which I have done.

I had 270/70R17 I think. Or something very close to that and a bike rack on the back.

This was my mileage..ehh idk why it was so bad!
    I still loved it

    I'm infatuated with Toyota 4x4's.

I don't think the 4runner is perfect; it's far from it. But I also don't think it's fair to say the vehicle is woefully outdated compared to a Tacoma which has pretty much all of the same features, but a smaller/less comfortable cabin.

This topic is almost entirely subjective, so I don't expect everyone to think the same on it. But for people to complain about the 4runner being outdated but then own/drive a Tacoma with drum brakes, cramped rear seating and non-power-adjustable front seats is just a bit comical in my mind.

I have both a 2019 4Runner Off Road and a 2019 Tacoma Off Road. Hands down the 4Runner is the better vehicle unless I need a bed. But I love them both.

Just as comical as comparing 4Runner against a pickup truck instead of other SUVs.

Either way, the OP got a 4Runner and he looks very happy —despite the angry face on his new 4Runner :)

Which of those features does the Tacoma have? Because the 4runner still has some that the Tacoma has been lacking (power-adjustable seats, rear-passenger vents, powered rear window). Not to mention that the 4runner's rear passenger seating is quite a bit more spacious and comfortable for adult-sized people.

I could give a crap about how the display looks, so long as it works. Is the entune system on the Tacoma really that much better by comparison? Not in my view. I just think people are being a bit nit-picky and hypocritical with some of these complaints.

And for some of these missing features, simplicity is a virtue. People buy 4runner's in droves because they want a simple, no-frills, offroad-capable SUV that will last a long time. If you want to own a comfy commuter SUV for 5 years of daily commutes, you can get a Jeep Grand Cherokee or Acura RDX, which are most definitely not cross-shopped with 4runners. It's the same reason the Tacoma sells so well despite being relatively boring and uninspiring in so many different ways compared to the competition.

I never said a 4runner gets a combined mpg of 20-22 mpg; I was implying those numbers are achievable under the right circumstances (mostly on the highway).

Go look at the fuelly numbers for both vehicles. 4runner ~17.5mpg. Tacoma w/ 3.5l v6 ~18.5 mpg.

So yes, the Tacoma gets better mpg's, but the difference isn't huge and, as some have pointed out in other threads, there is a tradeoff in terms of torque delivery.

Well considering that this SUV uses a body-on-frame chassis with a solid rear axle, it makes a hell of a lot more sense to compare a 4runner to a Tacoma than it does to compare it to an Acura RDX, Honda Ridgeline or similar unibody crossover.

Despite the vast differences in terms of body panels and external design, the underpinnings between the two are very similar.

4 runner is a much better vehicle than a Tacoma.
I have both now and the 4 runner is my sweetheart . Regret selling another 4 runner I had a red TRD Pro, she was a beauty.
I use the Tacoma as the sacrificial high mileage utility truck. I do like the TSS on the Taco. But the 4 runner will far outlast it, is more comfortable and actually better off-road.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you end up paying for your 18 4Runner Pro? My father in law is interested in them a lot.

    2017 I paid 42300
2018 the blue one pictured I paid 43400
Basically I paid 500 below MSRP on each one.

Find a good dealer. They are out there..not in Gulf states but in the Rockies.

Basically I will fly to my preferred dealer and purchase from them before I would deal will Gulf States Toyota for sales.

For me 4Runner’s “Scarface” styling is a non-starter. I’d have to be a blind Toyota fan to get past it.

Overall, you just get a lot more for your money in a pickup truck than in a SUV.

The 3.5 would be my guess too, just hoping Toyota does not follow the Ranger and go 4 cylinder turbo in the next gen Tacoma and 4R.

does toyota even have a turbo in their lineup right now?

I think turbos are a long way off for them.

I mean we are barely getting 6 speed trannies right now lol.
Id imagine we will get 8/9 speed trannies way before turbos.
The 3.5 is definetaly getting in the 4runner though.
Just picked up a 19 4runner and that 4.0 is so freaking nice.

The next generation Tacoma probably won't be out for another 4 or 5 years, just hoping it does not end up that way.

Toyota does hybrid instead of turbos.
