I have a 14 year old Tacoma that I got new in 2006. It is the very nice SR5, 2.7L 4 cylinder motor, Access Cab, rear wheel drive and manual transmission with currently 136K miles.

The clutch failed while in the dealers parking lot where I had the truck for the floor mat recall. Pedal went to the floor and stayed there. No warning at all. Repaired under warranty. Had 48K miles on it. Slave cylinder plus other parts.

Near home, same thing happened. Clutch went to the floor and stayed there. Had to have it towed to my local, trusted repair shop. It had 104K miles on it. Slave cylinder again. Replaced that plus other clutch parts.

I’m at 136K miles and wondering if the clutch slave cylinder is due to fail again.

Problem is, there are no clues when it happens. Clutch pedal goes to the floor. Can be pulled back manually. Truck has to be towed.

Have any of you with the manual transmission had this problem? I would be interested in any comments.

I’m not sure if I trust the old girl because of this.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

    Jolly

It's not a common issue. I'm on Toyota truck #4 never had issues with clutch hyd. in close to 900,000 combined miles

I have a 2002 with almost 200k. Replaced the clutch at 112,000. Otherwise no issues.

I've had more issues over the years with masters than slaves to be honest, haven't ever heard anything like what you've experienced.

The 2.7L 5MT slave cylinder is a pretty typical Toyota/Aisin design dating back a few decades. Nothing unusual going on there, I really would not expect chronic failures.

240k on my 08. Never had a problem with the clutch master, nor slave.(knock on wood) I did buy a replacement set around 200k, but haven't installed it yet.

I guess not common but it happens. I have 2013 and clutch pedal went to the floor and stayed at about 45,000. I drove it for a couple days pulling the pedal back up with my toes... Replaced the slave and clutch master.

    Wiggler,

How many miles on your 2013 now?

Hopefully, just the one failure would be great.

    Thanks for your note.

Only problem I've ever had is squeaky when it's hot out. There is a fix kit for this, but not going to mess with it until I need a new clutch. I've got 72K miles on my 2012.

Oh yea, the squeaky clutch comes back every 6 months or so, then I put a little grease up there and it goes away but always come back when the weather changes.

I don't know if this applies to the Taco because of the clutch interlock switch, but a manual transmission vehicle can be driven with no clutch.

Put the vehicle in 1st gear and crank the engine (this may require disengaging the interlock). Accelerate to the shift point, back off the gas, and (being careful to match RPMs) shift to the next higher gear. Repeat for each upshift. Downshifting is the reverse of this procedure. When you get to a redlight or stop sign shift into neutral, kill the engine, and brake to a stop. It takes a couple of minutes to get the hang of it, but once you do it becomes easy, and if you routinely double-clutch on downshifts then you're already a natural.

The interlock switch is the unknown quantity. If it's disengaged with the clutch down (regardless of the slave/master cylinder) then this procedure should work. If it's something on the clutch fork then all bets are off.

I may be using wrong search terms because I am not finding any clues.

My 2006 x-runner just started to have the clutch pedal go all the way to floor to engage. It now will grind shifting up from low gears once a day now.
Also a squeaking sound happens when pushing the pedal. Any insight will be helpful.

I went to a shop for a oil leak - the mechanic pulls it into the bay - Pedal went to the floor and stayed there - he could pull the pedal up but when pushed it down again it stayed down. Slave cylinder plus other parts but I was lucky it didn't happen to me on the road - at least I saved the tow fee - 130K - as a aside - when he first pulled it in I didn't think he knew how to use a stick and said something he didn't appreciate

I'm at 105,000 on my 2014 and no problems yet. I did have the squeak and have sprayed the pivot point a few times. It's been good for several months now. I think the last time I sprayed it was with something like the cheap Dollar General WD-40 type stuff. It's a little thicker than WD-40.
And lately, I've been pulling the brake fluid out of the master cylinder reservoir with a turkey baster and dumping in some new. I've done it a couple of times in the last few months and will probably swap it out again this weekend.
I do think I'm experiencing some wear though, a few months back I had to adjust the push rod at the pedal. It was engaging very near the top of the clutch pedal travel. Still feels good though.

I have a 2006 manual 4.0. At around 120K my clutch began to fail. Took it to the Toyota dealership for inspection and while they test drove it, the clutch completely "locked up" and required a tow. They ended up replacing the clutch master cylinder as well as the pressure plate. I'm up to 156K now with no issues. Other than the typical issue with the freakn clutch pressure being too stiff...no big problems.

Boy we were both lucky - see my post above - failed in the bay when mechanic was looking at a oil leak - I thought I was the only lucky one !

I’ve been lucky. 231,000 miles and the clutch and all hydraulic components are all original and working fine.
