too lazy to dig through my history but I remember telling him he's gonna be super disappointed if he thinks the ranger was going to steal Taco market share in any significant amount.

Wonder what his excuse is now :)

The Tacoma is a formidable force in this segment and nearly impossible to compete against.

    -History of quality/reliability
-Rugged, good looks (most opinions). Let's be honest, people will buy lousy vehicles if they look good. These Tacomas are quality vehicles AND they look good. Toyota nailed it on R&D in this dept. Even if you don't think the stock truck looks good, you can mod it out the yang and make it your own, custom, nice looking truck.. which isn't hard. Which brings up my next point.
-MASSIVE aftermarket with an established, passionate following who rarely leave their trucks stock. I see stock trucks every once in a while and they're usually driven by 55+ men... and most of those have bed caps, lol.

I hate the transmission and wish the engine had another 100+hp but overall, this truck has given me what I thought it would. It's a little small for my 6'3" frame but I knew that when I bought it.

Just like the 4 other Toyota family of vehicles we've purchased, never had any problems except for the radio on my 2016 but after the dealer flashed it, it auto re-updated and fixed everything.

If you buy chevy, Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep (DCJ), you're asking for problems (especially DCJ). That's not even an opinion. Ford can make decent stuff but it's still a step down from Toyota. Sure, there will be people with their "I have a Colorado with 9.6 million miles on it with the original tires" comments but I don't even waste my time with it. FACT: Toyota quality, overall, can't be matched. If you believe different, I'll just smile and nod at your ignorance.

That's not fanboyism, it's just the facts, mam.

I sometime regret going with my LB, I got because thats what my 07 was, I wish I kind of ventured out a bit though. I did test drive a MT SB sport, and I found it super rough compared to the LB and blamed the short wheelbase. I should have taken an Offroad for a drive to see if there was a difference, but they didnt have any. My local dealer only brings in DCLB's, and a couple Access cabs. I've never seen a shortbed on the lot before.

so far looks like you might be right. It just doesn't seem to be the initial smash hit that I thought be. There are still 3 more quarters thought. We will see.

I saw a base model next to me at a stop light yesterday. It looks good. I don't see any on the Ford dealer lots.

If you are a diehard Ford guy, it seems like the F150 is the better option in almost every situation. This may end up being what does in the Ranger.

I agree... there needs to be a substantial price diff between F150 and Ranger, IMO. If I was buying today, the F150 (actually 250) would be the only other truck I'd consider. I appreciate the bigger cabin size, mainly. Looking forward to the new Tundra.

Yeah I think the price is what’s killing it. The two 4x4 models at my nearest dealership are both in the middle/upper 40’s. That’s TRD pro territory with no skewp option. More importantly, it’s easily in the well packaged F150 territory with all the discounts they throw at those.
Growing up, the Ranger was always viewed, at least by me, as a really good basic pickup for cheap. I always thought of them as old man trucks. Tacomas on the other hand were more for the off road enthusiasts which still stands today. The problem is now that the Ranger is in no way cheap, small or basic and now has to compete with the full sized trucks which are better at being trucks and with the Tacoma which is a better off roader. They lost their identity.

I find all of the complaints laughable about the transmission. I did notice mine had some problems on the highway and there was some"gear searching". I told this to my dealer and they took care of it and it drives like a dream now. It's not like it was awful before, I just noticed there was more to be desired.

I’ll go “window shopping” at different auto maker dealerships on days when those dealerships are closed. I do this to just look at what’s new/improved when an auto manufacturer releases their new stuff. I did this last weekend and looked at the Ranger.

It was an XLT trim, 2WD, msrp of round about $35,000. Had a few bells and whistles, but not everything from, say, a Lariat trim. I looked all over the truck, and inside through the windows, but did not sit inside — it was locked.

Nothing exactly negative to say about the truck. I thought it looked fine. I imagined it would look pretty good with some sort of leveling/lift kit and some larger tires. Maybe an aftermarket front bumper, too.

But it reminded me of an older truck. Like it should have been the replacement for the Ranger had Ford not discontinued it, whenever that was, like 8 years ago.
