    Hello all,

I need help determining if an A340E automatic transmission from a 2003 tacoma xtracab prerunner 2.7L will work in a 2001 Tacoma xtracab prerunner 2.7L? So basically the same drivetrain

I own a 2001 Tacoma xtra cab prerunner with a 2.7L 4 cylinder, and im looking to buy a wrecked 2001 parts truck mainly for a replacement engine and transmission if mine fails in the the future.

Ive called the dealer, given them the VINs of both trucks and they say their the same trucks and everything is the same. I also called LKQ and they said as long as its a prerunner the transmission is the same. During my quest for help I also called 3 salvage yards and they say that the 2001 Tacoma trans is a 1 year only, and would NOT work, but couldn't say whats different.

I checked under both trucks today and found that on My 2001, the transmission dipstick comes out of the pan on the drivers side and is not a very deep pan. On the 2003 the dipstick comes out of the passenger side and the pan looks much deeper. Everything else appears to be the same. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The part #s on both transmissions are the same 30-40LE

The first two pictures are of MY 2001 transmission ( notice dipstick tube on drivers sidef6pXakYyTQi06fPdDCBwLw.jpg )

The second two are of the 2003 parts truck (notice dip stick coming out passenger side of pan)SsRsYc%aT2is+lUODU+IBw.jpg

    4 run, 2 don't

Now I'm going out on a limb to say '03 and '04 are unique in that they have PCM differences which don't allow them to interchange with older models but I could be wrong.

Btw I think it's a little soon to buy an extra transmission if you're not having issues with yours.

Believe it or not these transmissions are strong in our little trucks.

You're better off buying extra door handles and lower ball joints before anything else.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
hmm i dont know about the 4 cylinders. but the valve bodies on the v6s are different on 03-04 due to the kickdown cable being absent...
