I paid $14.00 for the Consumer report "guide" for my Tacoma in February.
At the time the rebate was $1000.
I felt that I had a leg up when I finally got to a dealer.
I ended up with a 2009 Superwhite TRD Sport Double cab longbox towing package for 25,200.
But then I fell for the Extra Care ($1700) and LoJack ($450).
Beware of the Finance guy! He just might convince you too!
Still pleased with my price today.

For you folks with TDR Off Road package, is it the OF or OC? The OC comes in with an invoice $900 cheaper than OF. So if may be misleading when someone is pricing the OF and you give your price with the OC.

Also, are the prices posted before or after toyota rebate? In Denver with one edmunds quote request I can get a Double cab 4x4, TRD Off Road (packages OF, TO, CF) for $27,900 (includes toyota 1500 rebate.) Before rebate that is about $300 over invoice.

What are the odds a dealer would go below invoice and then also give the toyota rebate?

I just bought a 2009 Double cab short bed 4x4 TRD sport 6 speed super white with a sticker of $30,664 for $25,200 after a $1500 rebate at Mountain States Toyota in Denver, CO. I flew in and drove home to Omaha, NE as it was over $3000 cheaper than the local dealers. Keep beatng on them Man!

Around 25.5 for that truck in Mass. plus tax.

Seems high by almost 4K. Invoice means nothing. Supply and Demand.

and supply has exceeded demand... i stopped by a dealer today that had 11 Tacomas on the lot. This sales guy was trying so hard to get me to sit down with him. I said I am in no rush and am only looking. But man this guy was trying so hard :D Right off the bat he took $2k off but as i was walking he said he could do better. It was weird. A year ago you would never see this kind of behavior from a sales guy. He wanted to get all my contact info so I gave it to him and reiterated I am not in a rush to buy. Told him I don't even need it right now but would consider it if I got a low price and again he wanted to get me to go inside...but i told him I had to go (i did) and he said he'd call me Monday. :D

So it does seem like a buyers market for sure. I might end up getting my TACO a lot sooner than I thought... we'll see.

I'm still in the buying process, but I've had 3 dealers...2 in La. and 1 in Texas offer me invoice minus the $1500 rebate for any Tacoma I want. Not sure how that compares to the original number in question, but anything above that is too high.

also it seems to depend on location i think. Not sure who else is in the area (CT/MA/NY/RI) but I've noticed right off the bat I've been given the Edmunds TMV cost (which is about $2k off sticker) but since I am in no rush and honestly do not need the TACO now they really seem to want to work with me. Saying name your price...so I did at one dealer and the guy freaked on me (I gave him a price of 4k below sticker) and said NO WAY. And I thanked him for his time and left but he chased me and asked for my # and said he'd talk to his sales manager on Monday...blah blah blah.

I still say 4k off sticker at this time is what's reasonable. From what I have experienced dealers (don't show it) are eager to sell trucks.

ESPECIALLY Chevy, my lord - I just went to quickly look at a Silverado 8cyl and right off the bat $5k off sticker and then some if i was serious but i'm not that interested in Chevy to be honest.

Just stick to your guns on the price you want. I am actually thinking of getting my TACO a lot earlier than expected if the price is right.

Toyota all weather floor mats. Mag light that clunks around in the jack compartment. Dog hair. Dog drool on the windows.
Pretty good! My friend who works at another dealer as a lease manager told me that he couldn't touch the price I got from another dealer, And that they were selling to me at a loss. But he had 5 Tocomas on his lot, And the dealer i bought from had 45 tacomas on his lot. I still got the $1,000 rebate.
Toyota kicks back for that. And pretty sure that even if the dealer sold it at a loss to me. Toyota will give them another kickback for getting it sold.

the invoice price they might show you, Or tell you about is still not what the dealer pays. It's all about kick back from the manufacturer.

How the dealer makes money is complicated. ibut even in a loss situation, The factory kicks back money to the dealer so the manufactuerer doesn't have to take back the cars/trucks they do not sell.

oh, At the end of my loan i will have paid something like $23900 on the truck that had a sticker of $25.500. thats after taxes, And fees included in the payments. and in NY there is a of taxes and fees. the one that gets me is the NY state tire recycle fee! hahah

dude, i have bought many new cars over the years, here is what you do..
first go to www.edmunds.com price out a vehicle exactly how you want.. it will tell you the dealer cost and any current rebates. in addition to that you can find out if they have a hold back fee. print out the price breakdown from edmunds.

now you can walk into a dealership and tell the first guy you see you need to speak to their manager. leave the sales guy out of the entire sale if you can avoid it because first of all he is not the one who does the negotiating, the sales manager does that.
when you find him tell him "look im not tryin to be an ass and i know you got to keep the lights on and make a few bucks for the sales guy how about i pay exactly 1000 over invoice not including dealer handeling bla bla bla. if you can do that then i buy today, if not i walk to another dealer."
if that gets his attention then ask to see the computer screen he is working from, if your paying cash its not necessary, but if you finance ask to see the purchase price of the vehicle, show where any cash you put down is and what the interest rate is. if its a lease ask about the money factor and residule.

here is why, whenever you negotiate a car deal with a dealer many times they ask you what payment you can afford. this is a tactic they use to get more money out of you. they will either raise the price of the vehicle and make you pay your payment and keep the profit or they will extend the payment terms out far enough they can load another thousand or more into the purchase price.

also if you have a trade dont bring that up untill you have settled on a price for the new vehicle first, this way they cant play the funny money game with you.

if they come sit you down at a table with a peice of paper with 4 squares on it, this is what we call the 4 square game, i dont play that game either! i write my price in the lower right hand corner with what im willing to pay and draw 3 X's in the other squares.
if you havnt seen this game before, they offer you somthing totally retarded overpriced in the 1st box, then you make a counter offer in the second, then they counter in the 3rd and they agree on the 4th to somthing somewhere in between. dont fall for it!
    good luck!

Bass M - you give sound advice... thanks.

oh i should also note that financing is not as easy as it was last year. A dealer did tell me they have declined a lot of people hence hindering sales of every auto they have... they also told me 2 people that purchased cars from them have already lost their jobs and are trying to sell them back or trade them for a cheaper car.

this is a sad economy for sure.

msrp was 32,224, 950 off for extra value package, 1,500 rebate and talked 2,400 more off. So 27,374 plus tax and dealer fees. It was the best deal in western mass I could get. Also Lia Toyota gave me the most for my american truck in trade.

How does that compare to your original deal of $29,000 OTD? I assume the 29 included TT&L?

I paid 28,700 OTD (OTD meaning truck, taxes and tags). So 300 dollars less. I woke up early Sat morning and said to myself, "I wonder if I can get some more off the deal." I emailed all 3 dealers that I got better offers. One dealer wanted me to call, but I declined. The other came up with 29,000 OTD and I need to buy it today or no deal. The last dealer said 28,799 OTD. I emailed first dealer and he said "We will not be beat, send me the quote." I emailed this quote, plus invoice to the dealer 1 and he beat it by 100 bucks. I had 3 dealers on this and this was as low as they would go. I am happy with it. Besides, they need to eat too. :D As far as the truck, I love it. It has alot of power. I am coming from a 97 dodge ram 1500 V8, so I was wondering how good the V6 would compare. I am happy as a clam! :)

Sounds like you did pretty well. Do you know how much below invoice the $26,700 is? I'm just wondering b/c I can't get anyone to go any lower than invoice minus the $1500 rebate. I know their "invoice" price has a few charge items in there so I just feel like there's more wiggle room.

I'm still waiting around on my dealer to locate a pyrite TRD sport prerunner. I found 3 in 5 minutes. Not sure why they need over 24 hours.
