2 mpg difference is nice but I think he needs to do more. The funny thing is when you are spending just short of $900 per month on fuel you could buy a hybrid for nothing when you factor in the fuel savings. I have been on him for years about it but no one ever listens to me LOL!

Now that is impressive. The 4x4 Hybrid comes in at 30 city / 27 highway / 29 combined. If it could really truly demonstrate a 7 mpg advantage over the Tacoma on highway that would equate to about $225 per month ($2700 per year) fuel savings over the Tacoma. Initial costs more than $10g higher though...

While I am a Toyota owner I have to say I am really impressed with the innovation coming out of Ford lately. This Escape hybrid is pretty slick, the new 3.5L V6 Ecoboost in the F-150's is amazing, the new Ranger concept was amazing, and the new Mustangs are incredible. They're engine packages are really impressing me right now in regard to power/mpg and where they are taking the limits to (412 hp Mustang GT, went from everyday, everyman middle-level sports car to Corvette competitor). I was really curious to see how the Ranger would shake out (competition with the Tacoma) but it sounds like it won't hit the US market.

I dont know about the current model of Escape but the Previous models with hybrid were Toyota drive trains that ford put in the escape. Innovation has to go to Toyota here...

I've filled up my 2011 3 times (it has ~1000 miles), and I'm averaging 22.79 mpg with a mix of city/highway driving in the Denver Metro area. I don't baby it, I use AC when it's really hot, and I cruise about 80 on the interstate when I can. I'm not a bit disappointed in my mileage.

According to wikipedia that is not correct; Ford does not put a "Toyota drive train" in the Escape. Besides in truck/SUV format Toyota only offers a 3.5L V6 Hybrid Highlander. The Ford Escape Hybrid utilizes a 2.5L I-4. I wouldn't think they would implement the same drive train...

Trimmed front inner fenders, custom tube front bumper (new one coming soon), custom tube rear bumper, more to come as budget allows.
I average 18-20 in the city and 20-21 on the highway. 20.4 overall with about an even mix of driving types - 4x4 Reg. 5-speed

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I've got a 4x4 access cab 4 banger with the manual and I get around 22-24mpg if I drive nice. In 4wd it gets anywhere from 16 to 19.

I really don't do the math often but today I got 27 mpg which I have got before but had thought it a fluke - apparently not. Mostly highway but some stop and go. Typically around 23 with 80% highway, 20% maintained dirt road and stop and go. Seems I get really good mileage. Fear of buying new tacoma for me is not getting same numbers. Pure highway winter driving with heat on, I got 23. City driving that goes way down. Tacoma has cab hi fiberglass shell.

    74,000 miles on a 2wd, 2011, 4cyl auto and averaged 23.5mpg (doing the math....not an estimate)
20,000 (so far) on 4x4, 2014, 4cyl auto; driving the same routes, in the same manor and averaging 21.3mpg.
Personally, the 2.3 loss in mpg's was worth it just to get away from the plywood, buckboard seat of the 2wd and get into bucket seats. 4wd is an extra bonus....it's also worth the reduced milage.
