Fair, nasty grinding noises are usually not good, and worth getting checked out, if for no other reason than to have the dealer note it in case there is an issue down the road.

How steep of a hill is this?

My automatic has hill hold. Come to a complete stop, foot off the brake, and you have a couple of seconds to get back on the gas. You gotta put your foot into it though, because if you lightly brush the gas pedal it will release the brake and you don't have enough power to overcome gravity.

However, you shouldn't ever have your foot off the brake until the intersection is clear and you are ready to start rolling again. Safety reasons. That's basic driver's ed, guys.

Because you're trying to accelerate with the rear brakes partially engaged. Why not simply do it properly? Transmission in low gear, as you're engaging the clutch, right foot goes from brake to accelerator and off you go.

I agree the experience is disconcerting. I get it when wheeling. Stopped facing up a steep hill holding the brake. Release the brake and get a bunch of weird noise just before gas pedal/acceleration.

    Don’t like it.

Yes the 3rd gen Tacoma does this. I feel it is excessive as well. Out of 4 other vehicles I've owned while living here. The Taco was the only one doing this crap. I have a somewhat steep driveway.

Parked uphill, let off brake for a millisecond while my foot moves over to the accelerator. In that split second the truck rolls back, beeps at me and flashes TC light.

I work on Tacomas every week. Only the 3rd gen has done this.

Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.
    It says:
    ----------
    Hill-start assist control (if equipped)

Helps to prevent (emphasis added) the vehicle from rolling backward when starting on an incline or slippery slope.
    ----------
Doesn't say anything at all about the vehicle rolling backward being "normal."

Ergo, if your vehicle is rolling backward the hill-start assist control is not functioning properly. So yes, I'm taking it in.

There is no way in hell it can be healthy for car car to roll backward before the transmission engages and moves you forward.

You need to press then brake hard to set bill assist. It’s a common mistake.

I mentioned it to my service writer friend who looks after my FJC and LC 200 series. Mentioned its normal. Then I searched here, the the thread I posted, mentioned typical. So I just live with it.

LOL Ok brother. Whatever helps you sleep at night.

Good thing there are no hills in KS and you haven't had to deal with the nature of a 3rd gen taco.

Described it perfectly. But I wouldn't expect anything else from you, my friend! :)

Maybe you can talk to our members from Kansas @ugawino

My 2013 would roll back slightly on steep-ish hills at a stop. Just like my 2020. Never let it roll back far enough on either for noises or alerts to develop.

I should clarify that my Sport doesnt exhibit these symptoms. It holds almost any hill without rollback or noises. The only times I haven't seen it hold were off-road antmounds that I shouldn't have been climbing anyway.

Right on dude. The Hu, while definitely a bit eclectic, are a damn fine Mongo-Metal band!

First, It's fairly normal for AT vehicles to roll back. Especially the ones who's weight on an incline overcomes the torque at idle produced by the engine on the TC. This engines torque curve seems to be at a fairly high rpm, compared to the old engine which could be why this is happening. Engine torque at idle has to overcome gravitational forces. the steeper the incline the greater the force and the more likely the car is to roll back.
I just read the manual and it says that hill start deactivates in 2 seconds. So if you let go of the brake for longer, it disengages. I wonder if there has to be a certain amount of force(Greater incline) to engage hill start.
