Bloated, 'cause 'merica loves Big Macs. And leather, cupholders, in dash nav, and all kinds of other complex, expensive and profit making wizardry.

Pick a model that's been around a while. Nissan Z cars, Miatas, Corollas, Camrys, Civics, Accords, etc etc. All are bigger and 'better'.

The 16 is polarizing to look at. I like it some days and others I want to kill it with fire.

    ^^^ Dude is right.

1st Gen, 2nd Gen, or even 3rd Gen, the Tacoma is still the only truck to buy.

WOW 66,000 F-150's? No wonder they don't want to bring the ranger back. They would without a doubt have to create some distance on price between the two, and with the way the midsize segment is moving that is proving increasingly difficult. It seriously puts Tacoma sales to shame.

The biggest value add that Toyota has is reliability. I don't even own a Tacoma but I am planning on a 2016 (if I can get over the lack of power ports in the back seat of the DC). Everyone around me with domestic vehicles has them in the shop all the time. My parent's 2004 Ford F-150 had to have its trans replaced, my buddies 2014 equinox had unnecessary vibration so he dumped it for a prius, same guys 2014 top of the line suburban had to be lemon lawed. My father in law's 2010 sierra 1500 had it's whole engine replaced in his second year of ownership. Domestics have had a terrible track record, I have been lucky to never have owned one.

Ranger is likely coming back. Ford has entered negotiations to build the Ranger in Michigan.

Cannabilism of sales has to be a real threat. They are selling these F-150s like hot cakes but at huge discounts. How many posts have you seen where a solid Tacoma purchaser is on the edge because of 10k+ incentives on the F-150? They won't be able to do that if the ranger is the middle ground.

They'll bring it back and ruin it, most likely.

Pretty hard to ruin something that died as a compact in a midsized world. Check out the global Ranger. It's a well rounded truck that competes well with the Hilux. Anywho, back to the topic, the Tacoma hasn't widely been advertised as gettint a new model in 2016 by toyota. I doubt many people off this site know they are buying the last of the 2nd gens.

I know people that work for Toyota that own Tacomas that are completely unaware that the 3rd generation is on the way. Many here are reading way to much into the sales trends before the gen 3 hits the market. Gas is cheap, SAAR is high as hell, sales being up isn't crazy.

GM is doing it. I doubt Ford will have much of a problem. 50 percent of the sales are to fleet or business use. Another 20 to people who need the capacity of a half ton. If you can grow that last 30 percent of people into, lets say, another 100,000 Rangers plus what the F150 sells it will make Ford lots of dough.

Ford was watching GM. GMs success with the Colorado is dragging back the Ranger. Ford will double down with a truck that beats the Colorado, so I expect a very well equipped and powerful Ranger with a lower payload and towing capacity than the true global model to avoid blurring sales. I also expect little movement on MSRP much like what GM is doing with the Colorado to keep F150 sales high based on the lack of price savings versus work capabilities.

GM also needed to have the government bail them out. I would hardly call their ability to create a sustainable product pipeline a sure thing. Oh, and MSRP? Ask any domestic purchaser if they pay 'MSRP'. These games are going to constrain sales in ways we can't understand because we get data second hand. Ford would be wise to keep clear for some time.

Ford didn't need a bailout but accepted loans to keep competitive with government motors. Toyota also accepted a special financing agreement for the same reason. While I agree GM is a financial mess, Ford made the changes necessary before the economics times forced the issue. I'm sure Ford has figured out the Ranger is more than a safe gamble. Plus it looks like this Ranger will use production spots that are being vacated to Mexico. What I mean to say is Ford is repurposing an existing line to Ranger production that would otherwise simply shut down. The total investment considering everything will be off the shelf for the Ranger makes it a very safe bet financially with very little invested to play the mid size game.

As for MSRP you've clearly been out of the loop on the Colorado. While getting 10k off an F150 or silverado is normal the Colorado has been selling for no less than 3K off sticker. That lack of a huge price gap helps keep full sized sales strong.

I agree, but barely. Until the past month stock on those Canyons/Colorados have been so slim, this is what has driven prices up. I know, because I have had the hardest time trying to get a test drive. They are starting to populate the lots of dealers now and I can assure you the small price gap will HAVE to expand. No one goes in to a Toyota dealership expecting the same.

Time will tell. Analysts say the midsized class could return strong if gas stays cheap and people keep moving up to bigger vehicles.
