Best advice my father ever gave me:

A man with a good pair of hands can earn 50 cents.
A man with a decent brain can earn a dollar.
A man who can use both at the same time gets $1.50.

Keep in mind Canada is a huge country lol, I live in Alberta where the oil field is dominant and low oil prices without good access to tide water has killed the economy in parts of the prairies.

I am not in the oil patch and I’m doing very well, but lots of my friends are not.

Alberta took a shit-kicking for sure. That’s always been a challenge for an economy based mostly on the supply of a single product. I think, at the same time, it’s a comparison between exceptionally good times, when oil is high, to just normal times, when oil is low. I have a couple cousins in Alberta who’s jobs are not tied to oil and gas, and they just keep putting along same as always, but they never got rich during the boom years either.

Yeah it’s completely the opposite for your career path out in Alberta. Keep in mind though that we’ve seen the oil and coal industries hit a low point after a hiring spree a decade ago. It’ll be funny if people who moved here from out east head back to the Maritimes lol. Anyways it’s hard to fight the numbers and the Canadian economy has seen marginal growth for a couple of years now mainly due to low resource prices which drives a good amount of the economy out west.

I’m not in the patch either. My education would of supported a high paying reclamation job but I went into Agriculture due to the higher stability. I make a good salary with consistent bonus opportunities. That being said my classmates who went into the reclamation business a decade ago all owned million dollar houses and had wives that drove Mercedes G-Wagons, but those have mostly been taken back by the banks now. A few of them are doing quite well though but most of them either lost everything or came out even and are going back to school at 35 for retraining because they’ve become too specialized.

I’ve got cousins and friends in Alberta as well who don’t work in oil either, same thing they do fairly well for themselves, but it’s never indicated by what oil is doing.

I feel like everyone uses the oil industry as an indication of how the rest of the country is doing!

It’s because Canada’s GDP looks awesome when the patch is moving and goes flat when it’s not.

Also a lot of industries, like truck manufacturers, depend on resource industries for sales. When those industries slow down, sales numbers drop off as companies tighten budgets.

I’m not going to get political but if the east would use one hundred percent domestic oil supply where possible the dips would smooth out a lot.

Yeah......that’s a classic trap mind you. Spend your “boom money” like it’s going to last forever, then miss one paycheque and it’s off to the cleaners. In the boom times idiots think they’re stinking rich, and in the bad times they give all the money back to the people who weren’t idiots.

I think that happens all over the world.

There would be a lot of happy people out here if Energy East pulled through, I can’t see it ever happening though.

Everyone wants it except one province. Every party needs a pooper which is why we invited them jks. It scares the crap out of me though because when the east does something that is perceived to hurt the west, the political crazies from both sides come out and Alberta gets nutty.

If your a tradesman that is reliable and hard working you can find a job here for sure,
As far as tacoma sales down a lot of guys need a big truck for hauling stuff and workers and are possibly still in the big truck mindset for having lots of room for their families. With gas prices up people in cities could be looking for more mpg efficient vehicles.
That said, it seems like a lot of Tacomas on the road here in Kamloops. Number one vehicle for mountain biking, skiing, hitting the mountains!

We may have just reached “Maximum Tacoma” before America. Like seriously, I saw about 15 of third-gens on my 15 minute drive to work. I think everyone who wanted one, and could afford one, has bought one by now. Those that still want one, are waiting for the 2020s with the new jazz.

That might be all it is.

Really? After seeing the Nissan Quashqai commercials last night I was under the impression everyone was wheeling CUVs in BC now *sarcasm*.

Subaru, Jeep, and Toyota will likely always own that adventure market until they do something to screw it up.

After seeing the Kia go up hells revenge in Moab the moms here are jumping curbs everywhere!
I have owned all three, Jeep, Subaru and my Tacoma and had great experiences with them. Really like and trust my Tacoma heading out into the backcountry. We are a big country with not many people (perfect), help can be a long way away.

Starting to see a lot more newer Tacoma’s in my area Edmonton, maybe it’s the price of trucks make Tacoma’s seem reasonably priced comparatively and high fuel prices, but the resource lull has slowed things down too. It’s a tough industry and volatile. I’m glad I’m out of it it’s better to just putt along personally than ride the highs and lows.

The TRD Tacoma’s cost more out the door than full sized mid tier trim trucks with similar options and fuel economy. I think the Tacoma growth comes from first time truck owners who want something easier to park and in general would prefer to buy Toyota.
