Is a aftermarket security system a good idea.

Last year I caught someone snooping around my truck and chases them off. Now I have added more moola in mods.

    Yes and no.
A flashing LED on the dash is just as effective.
Alarms are ignored by bystanders, but they may scare off joy riders.
Vandals don't care. Smash and grab don't care.

Pros can get around any alarm system quickly.
Amateurs that have decided they want your truck will repeatedly trigger "false" alarms until you stop arming it, then they move in.

Thinking about getting a kill switch put in. Anyone have those.

Helpful against joyriders, but if a pro has "marked" your truck, it's gone.

    Best security is good insurance.

When your truck is off and the key removed, do you see a icon on the clock display that looks like a truck with a key on it?
If so, you have a chipped key.

It's an engine immobilizer. The ECU won't fire without the chip.

How easy to bypass? As with any security system, if a repo man can buy a tool, so can the crackhead down the block.

Best security is to not leave anything in it, and leave it unlocked. If there are valuables in it, they'll break the window and take them. If it's locked and there are no valuables in it, you won't lose your stuff, but will still have to fix the broken window.

If the riffraff have enough skill/tools to start the engine and steal your ride without keys, don't think they'll say "geez, the door is locked, we won't take it"...

This past weekend someone tried getting in to mine through the sliding rear glass. They were, seemingly, unsuccessful but tore the hell out of the rubber trim surrounding it. I always back in, tailgate about an inch from my garage, bed cover down, under a carport with motion activated lights. Not last weekend, and I paid for it. Luckily my sunglasses or work keys weren't taken. Not much else anyone would want.

Does anyone know about replacing that trim? I tried a search and found nothing.

i broke a black glass in my old 2007 by loading a log through it.

toyota only offered the rear as an entire unit assembled from the factory. it was over $1000 to replace...

buuuut it was a company truck so we said it happened at work!:p

i have Python 5904. 2 way remote starter. i love it. never had anyone snoop around my truck. that i have seen. adjustable sensitivity and shock sensor. it alerts your remote fob if the alarm is triggered.

i live in utah. no problems so far. worth every penny in my opinion. and the ability to start my truck from a mile away. thats kind of cool. as well as add on features to roll windows up and down.

    or you can do this....IMG_1856_zps47e16bd5_4d57dff07e8fb2c80307e22ba665fa056ad6f30a.jpg

    2 problems i have encountered....

when police see my truck I get followed quite often to run plates and such

when i drive through a bad part of town, gangbangers throw gang signs at me and talk shit as I wait at stop lights...

thinking about stripping the tint to avoid the extra attention but I love how I never get blinded by hi-beams and I never have to wear sunglasses anymore

Nice tint, looks good. There are companies that make different tint shading that is suppose to make it more difficult to smash in a window. I'm wondering how much it will affect bullet drop if I have to engage a target through my window. I have a window and some security tint on the way, going to shoot through it a see if it affects it at all. I'm thinking it wont.

Viper makes one. Just a thought, it will slow them down.

I have been a car stereo and alarm installer since the 80,s.
Remember, there is no such thing as to much security. The more the better!
With all trucks I have personally owned, I installed the very best in security.
With my new Taco, I spared no expense. I live in a big city and a lot of people want and like the TACOMA here. Not to mention, your average thug.

I started off with a basic auto alarm by PYLE industries. http://www.pyleaudio.com/Products.aspx?/products/Car+Security/Remote-Start-Alarm-Systems

You don't have to pay a lot for a good and reliable alarm these days that have the features that are important, like engine disable, all entry triggers, window shock, frame and body shock and tilt sensors along with a magnetic sensor for the sliding back window and any other entry point covered such as the tail gate or a tool box. There are many alarm systems with all the bells and whistles out side of that, so the more you spend the better the system is.

The LED or LED's that comes with most alarms if placed correctly, will detour most thieves. I find that a bright Blue LED works best according to cytological studies. Red LED's are a thing of the past with older systems.

In the end after all has been done, your best bet will always be to have good insurance on your vehicle. If they want it, they will get it!

I just recently added The LOJAK GPS tracking system to my TACO, along with a mini DVR and Cameras.

Like I said, There is no such thing as enough!.

As an aside, look up Mattgecko on here. He sells a nice lockbar for the sliding glass. Price is right, around 20 frogskins, and it drops right in and blends in as though it was factory.

I agree with "no such thing as too much". I also believe that you'll never truly theftproof something be it a truck, house, whatever..but what you want to do is make it as unattractive and time-consuming as possible to any would-be thieves.

Window tint is nice to have to help shade the inside of your rig and make it harder for people to look inside to see what you have but it also helps a thief brake the glass and not be heard as much because the glass doesn't shatter and make as much noise as without.

I know this for a fact because I've had a couple different stereo's stolen out of my brothers cars over the years (don't ask me why I would kept buying/ letting him borrow stereo equipment). The only good thing when the glass was broken with the tint on it made for a fast and easy clean up of the glass because it stuck to the tint film.
