Hi all just looking around to see what are the original shocks that came with the Tacoma from factory. I read so much on shocks that I am confused. Be nice with your replies.

Depends what trim. There are a few different shocks. If asking about your 21 Sport, I believe it came with Hitachi.

My 2017 Off Road came with a lower end set of Bilstein's. I upgraded them to a slightly higher end Bilstein a few years ago.

If you asked me (and you didn't) I would say for get the original shocks and get some Bilstein 5100 - not expensive and will improve the ride over stock shocks IMHO. Again - I know that's not what you were asking.

2020 TRD Sport with Hitachi's. Didn't like, too stiff. Was able to get some new TRD off road Bilstein take offs and ride is greatly improved.

yeah the OR are or were Bilsteines 4600 I believe - so yeah if some one is parting out their OR shocks that would be a good choice as well.

EDIT: I stand corrected - the OR does NOT come with Bilstein 4600 - I hate it when people put out bad info on the forum and I don't want to be that guy.

I test drove the Sport only once and found it stiffer ride than the Off Road. I preferred the cushier ride of the Off Road. Not sure what shocks come on the SR, SR5 & Limited, as I never test drove them. (Nor the Pro, for that matter).

As much as I liked the oem Off Road Bilstein's, my ride improved even more with a 2" lift thanks to the Bilstein 5100's. No more oem brake dive.

Not sure why anyone would want the stiff Hitachi ride for.

The ORs do not come with 4600s. They come with a proprietary Bilstein made for Tacomas that are smaller than the 4600s. I changed my OR to 4600 and it made a huge difference. The only difference between the 4600 and the 5100 is the latter are made for lift capabilities.

You are spot on. The 4600’s are replacement shocks for the proprietary Bilsteins that come on many Tacomas. The difference is that the 4600’s are far better and superior to the original shocks. The 4600’s are exactly the same internally as the 5100’s with one very small difference in the valving. Other than that they are the same except 5100’s are for lifted trucks.
I have a 4x4 Sport double cab and replaced my stock shocks with 4600’s around 80,000 miles. The difference and improvement on road, off road and every road was amazing. Plus the 4600’s are a little less $$.

I installed 5100 front shocks on my 2022 Sport last weekend. It rides so much better , it is amazing.
I had installed the rear 5100s a year or so ago. The Sport shocks are ok if you don't want to spend the $, but I used to laugh every time
I'd crawl under the truck to change the oil. Do the rears first if you don't want to spend a lot at one time.
Watch for sales. I got mine from Amazon for about 93$ apiece. Well worth the investment.
