If it's a total loss are you able to register it and insure it?

Depends on the state, most salvage titles need to be inspected prior to reissue of plates.

In California, it is not a big deal at all. The DMV inspects the brakes, and makes sure you have the head lights calibrated/pointed(I'm serious), then it can be registered and insured like any other vehicle at the insurers discretion as far as coverage(whether they will offer full coverage or just liability). I've owned three salvage titled vehicles, one of which I rear ended a semi truck on the freeway and crushed the front of my dodge diesel. It was deemed totalled, I received a pay out of more than I bought the truck for originally, bought it "back" from my insurance company for dirt cheap, fixed it, got it "inspected" and registered, and got full coverage through my insurance company, then sold it a few years later for what I originally paid for it.

That seems like a long drawn out explanation. Sorry haha. But to sum it up, I guess it depends on the state you plan on registering it in and the insurance company.

I wonder if it leaks when it rains? It looks like the top of the doors wouldn't seal, nor the windows.

    Thanks for that!

What was the difference in $ between the insurance and the amount to buy it back?

They gave me around $10000, which was minus $500 for my deductible, and I bought it back for around $1500 if I remember correctly(buying it back really means they never have to deal with coming to get it and selling it at auction). It was nothing relatively speaking. I put around $3000 in suspension and replacing the damaged components so had a nice little chunk left over. Dodge 4x4 Diesels are like Tacomas though in that they sell for over KBB, even with a salvage title, are hard to come by around here, and are highly sought after. I also totaled an explorer and got around $5000 from my insurance company, bought it back for $500, and sold it as-is for $1500 from some dude that brought all the parts needed to fix it and spent all day in my driveway fixing it, and drove off in it. It doesn't always work out that way haha.

Yeah $1500 seems like a no brainer, especially if you know the market and how to repair accordingly.

Call me crazy but I think it looks kind of cool all fucked up like that, not that I'd wish that for my truck! (knock on wood). Anyways, I think if the price is right I wouldn't turn down a deal on something like this. Then you wouldn't have to worry about dinging it up or scratching it xD
