If the off road mods are done correctly, they will absolutely not be a waste of money. They serve as improvements for multiple aspects for off road travel.

If done incorrectly, or just for social media validation, then you are not wrong.

Other than a better view looking down the highway, name any other improvement that these mods serve on this abominated RWD?

My dislike is blind. I think the entire car mod industry is a waste of money.

If you want a more trail capable vehicle, a flashier mall crawler, or a faster rice burner, take the money you would have put into mods and just buy a better/more expensive vehicle next time.

This truck had an identical twin for sale about a month ago in the Tacoma area. It was posted in the pnw thread if I remember correctly. Truck was red though. Same exact rims but color matched red, same exact lift. Had enough under body red leds to be seen from iss. Also had an insane price tag on it. Somebody must have thought it was a gem though. I was going to post it here but I can’t find the listing anymore. This “style” is becoming increasingly popular. On any given day you will spot dozens of trucks like this around ea wa and north id. To me it’s not stylish or practical but as others have said it’s their money so do what makes you happy.

I understand your view, however I also think you over simplified the point.

So a guy has the choice of a bone stock base model Tacoma SR5. It has the same exact dimensions, body lines, etc as the Tacoma TRD Offroad or TRD Sport. Both of which are exactly as you put, more expensive and possibly more capable in some aspects than the SR5.

Now, this guy goes ahead and steps up to the TRD Offroad for the rear locker, and some of other features that separate it from the SR5. He also wants 33" tires, front locker, matching gear ratios to go with the 33" tires, and more travel in the suspension than what the TRD Off road has to offer. Which vehicle would you suggest that has all of this from the factory, and is still a Tacoma?

If you are suggesting buying a Jeep or other brand vehicle that might have some of these features from the factory, than what's the point in wanting a Tacoma?

Parts are parts. Money is money.
If done correctly, there is an improvement for sure. Call it a mod, call it an upgrade.

Just because a vehicle comes from the factory one way, absolutely does not mean that it was built to fit the needs of 100% of the buyers. Nor was it built at the factory to be 100% perfect for every situation off road, or on road for that matter.

It was built in a factory to fit the needs of a large majority of the end users, as well as fit a mold to satisfy the government's criteria.

Changing a tire from OEM to some other name brand tire is a mod/upgrade.
Putting on an upgraded brand of wiper blade is a mod.
Putting seat covers on the seats is a mod.
Adding a cap, rack or tonneau cover is a mod.
All these mods can be improvements to a factory built vehicle.

No different than upgrading (modding) the suspension, gears, tire size, engine tune, super charger, turbo, skids, bumpers, winch, etc....

Back to the guy with the SR5. He could build his truck with many of the upgrades (mod) that he wants yet still come in cheaper than buying the highest trim with the most available options from the same vehicle lineup.

If you are not into modding anything at all on a vehicle and just buy a more expensive rig to get a feature or two, then that is you saying that you are a finance mechanic with no skills or understanding of the aftermarket world.

    Go you!!!

You should have saved that winch money and purchased a more appropriate vehicle.

Whatever that hell that would be??

Why didn't they just save all that money from the mods and just purchase a more expensive vehicle that already has these features from the factory.
