My 2023 loaner truck has this shit, as does my dad's 2018 Yukon; I've heard that now R134a has been deemed bad for the environment...? Does anybody know the reason they're phasing out R134a? I've popped a lot of hoods at car shows, and it would seem that only diesel pickup trucks have R134a now; I hear it's flammable, and in my opinion it takes longer to cool down the vehicle on really hot days...

r134a is less harmful than r12 but still a pretty aggressive greenhouse gas. r1234yf is a Hydrofluoroolefin, similar to a hydrocarbon (like propane) and not harmful to the environment in a climate change kinda way. The downside to it over a hydrocarbon like propane (R290) is that propane breaks down into water and a Hydrofluoroolefin breaks down into a PFCA, an acid that isn't quite so neutral as water. I kinda wish they'd just use propane actually, it is an excellent refrigerant and has similar properties to R12 so you can run it at lower pressures and it has higher evaporative heat transfer. r1234yf is flammable, but in the quantities used in car AC it isn't gonna be anymore of a concern than the gasoline you carry around. R1234yf actually has an upcoming mix gas designation with 10-15% r134a that can make it non-flammable they claim, I'm more just interested in the heat transfer ability though, that one would be called R451A/B

But if the condenser gets impacted in a collision and there's propane in there, couldn't that cause an explosion?

It's extremely unlikely, the quantity is very low and the system if punctured isn't a sealed vessel anymore, it might make a little puff or a momentary jet of flame but it wouldn't explode. Despite being flammable it is still quite resistant to ignition

Is your truck R134a or the new shit? My uncle had a 2017 AC TRD Sport and I believe it used R134a...

They sell the 1234yf at stores in Idaho now, about $22 a can. Not great pricing but doable for as often as I have to repair AC

Am I going to have to retrofit my truck to 1234yf at some point?
