I know of no maker who recommends oil changes longer then 5 k miles with standard non synthetic oil. Of course, I only owned Toyotas, Hondas and Subarus...

So really, 3000 to 5000 miles in 40 years....that's not that impressive.
The big advance is in synthetics, not standard.

My dealer was explaining the 2 year maintenance and the guy was reading the paper he had on the table for both of us to view and he said "the oil changes will be synthetic every 5k miles". He then said, it will actually be conventional and crossed out the word synthetic.

Seriously though, fuck that shit. I begged them to give me more money off as I dont have any intention to go to the stealership for the maintenance plan. I'd rather bite the 100 extra cost per year and do the servicing my self and make sure it's done right. The only thing is that receipts need to be saved.

Lol that's some horse crap dude! I would run as fast I could from that dealership. My dealership says every 5k with synthetic.

The info you were given was correct for the 2015 but is not correct for the 2016. The 2016 uses 0W20 synthetic in both the 2.7L and 3.5L.

This was while I was buying a 2016 2.7L. I thought it was fishy so I read the manual when I got home and I realized how sketchy they were. Although to be fair the manual specifies 0w20 and a synthetic blend could be 0w20 and it wouldnt fall under the full synthetic category. But I've already decided that I wont be dealing with dealerships unless it's a recall. I doubt they will even grease anything like the drive shafts during the "major maintenance" intervals. They will probably just do an oil change and give you a list of recommendations on things you should get done in order to make them money.

It uses 0w20, so I'm assuming it's synthetic.

I had a commuter 2007 V6 Honda Accord that my wife bought brand new and it had a OCI more than 5k but less then 10k. Typically it was changed around 8k but she would use the cheapest oil avaible and have he father do it. I changed to synthetic after 100 miles but I never had a problem with the engine. I prefer synthetics for all oil in my cars but dyno oils work.

They still do a 5000 service but for motors designated for 10k oil with synthetic change, they don't change the oil then. If you want it changed every 5000 miles with synthetic, I believe, you will have to pay for it or they may do it with standard oil at 5k. That's the way it is with our Venza with 10k oil changes. Now that the free service is done, I pay for synthetic very 5k miles.

You might as well have them do the free maintenance and if you want an additional change every 5k, then do that one on your own or elsewhere.

Honda has oil change intervals over 5000 miles on conventional oil.

Service rep at Austin, TX Toyota dealer indicates 5K oil changes with standard oil and there is an up charge for synthetic.

I am not OCD about oil or oil changes. Change it at 5k and be done with it. This is a truck and not a NASA space ship.

The 0W20 Toyota Genuine Motor Oil (TGMO) is sourced by Toyota from Mobil. It is a close cousin of Mobil 1, but with fewer anti-wear additives.

If you want to learn more about oils, the BITOG (Bob is the oil guy) site has a wealth of information.

"My dealership says every 5k with synthetic. Lol that's some horse crap dude! I would run as fast I could from that dealership."

I agree. But with my revised version.

There are two things that everyone fretting over oil should do.

    1) if you are trying to protect a warranty, do exactly what the book says for the warranty period. (this does not mean you have to have a dealer do the work)

    2) if you are out of warranty, or don't much care about the warranty (me), then you should pick a proper oil based on viscosity and service rating that meets or exceeds what your vehicle calls for under the conditions you are using it in.

    3) if you aren't willing to consider longer OCIs and don't have extreme conditions (most people don't) then just use a quality dino. Most modern dinos are almost to the level of syn quality of less than a decade ago.

    4) if you are willing to move to longer OCIs or actually do have extreme conditions, an off the shelf syn should be considered.

    5) ONLY an oil lab analysis by some place like Blackstone will tell you two important things. The actual health of your engine, and how much life your oil had left in it when you changed it, (assuming you continued with the same operating conditions)

    6) most newer and modest mileage engines are going to be healthy. So the conditions and oil type will be the determining factor for recommended OCIs.

    7) most of you will be shocked at how many more miles, or how much more time, the lab will tell you the oil is good for.

    8) only you can decide if you want to follow science or magazine ads. Also, the lab work will show there is no real value in any boutique syn engine oil.

My dealer's ExpressLube lane serves both 5W30 dino and 0W20 synth from bulk. The lube tech (who is typically not a full mechanic) just goes by what it says on the oil filler cap and grabs either Hose #1 or Hose #2.

There's no need to over-analyze the situation. :) You are in NJ. Your frame will rust out before the engine fails due to a wear- or lubrication-related issue.

You talking about the maintenance rmeinder system which monitors several factors...it can go over 5k but under some conditons, no.

I hear you. So many owners over do the oil change intervals while neglecting other factors which results in a motor with plenty of life in a car that can't pass inspection. The body is more valuable then an other single mechanical component......and yet, we have " oil change fetish"

No. I'm talking about the recommended intervals. My wifes previous honda had intervals of 7500 miles on conventional. It had the recommendation right on the info tag in the engine bay.

True, since the mid 90's. 20 years ago. However, the manual did specify 'normal duty', and 5k for 'severe duty'. Both were defined in the book.
