Anyone found a split boot repair for steering rack boots or have you repaired steering rack boot with glue ?
Also read that someone used flex tape and a heated screwdriver and that melted the 2 pieces of rubber back together.
Anyway anyone used any these methods which you think is easiest?
My boot broke in one place but I was thinking just adding grease to the hole and trying to reseal it not sure I'll be able to get new boot in time before go out of town.

Probably about 3-4 inch tear. It leaked out what looked like oil almost but I guess was just really old grease, thought it was power steering fluid at first but it was not.
Oily but not oil im assuming old grease mixed with water. Truck has 337K on it now it was original boot probably.

If the boots are torn its usually because the rack is leaking oil. Nothing will fix it, new boots would be a bandaid.

Right now it will be band aid I have to go on a trip Im not replacing a rack before I go at worst it will be a boot replacement which i was trying to avoid.

Also I adjust the alignment before and never loosened the inner tie rod clap so that could have caused the boot to become overstressed and contributed it to breaking prematurely possibly. The alignment I did was only about 10,000 miles ago.

As for the rack leaking if that were the case my power steering fluid should have changed and its not low its Full where it already was.

Basically, yes! Thats why I was looking into videos where people used blue Loctite gel glue as a temporary fix although it was on a CV joint but still might work. Now you're talking bro Gorilla tape that the primal solution I was looking for, righteousness.

The fluid that was leaking was kinda brown and rusty colored looking, power steering pump has leaked for last 10 years at least but never had to top it off til this year.
But youre thinking my rack is leaking internally I guess and causing it to leak into the steering rack boots?
What happened to your rack did it stop turning or it just leaked so bad you could not keep any power steering fluid in it anymore ??

Fixing broken stuff on a road trip is usually 3x more expensive and takes at least twice as long....

Hey Tacobell07, I just asked the parts man at a Toyota Dealer the cost of a new Rack & Pinion unit and he quoted $840.00! He said NEW ones are not available only Reman! Mine is leaking Power Steering Fluid too! But the reservoir wasn't too low. I also have a torn passenger side boot. The CCN says it's not worth it to repair the boot (bellows) because the leak is internal and a new boot will just start leaking in a couple of weeks.

If your rack is seeping, which is common on older Tacomas, the fluid will often collect inside the boot over time and make the leak look worse than it really is. RockAuto sells replacement boots for as little as six bucks. They're not OEM, but they're much better than leaving a torn boot that allows water and debris in. Throw on a cheap boot, clean everything up, and keep an eye on the leak. That way, you'll get a better idea of how bad it actually is and how soon you'll need to deal with the bigger job of replacing the rack.
