I have recently started having my OEM/factory Tacoma stereo unit randomly die/reboot on me while I am driving. Happens while listening to music, and while not being used for anything at all. The entire thing goes completely black, few seconds later the side Function section labels light up, but the main display remains completely black. I manually power cycle it by holding down the On/Off button numerous times, but it never comes back up.

Only thing that seems to work is to shut off the engine, then start up again, and so far, the stereo goes back to normal functionality again. This situation has happened about 5 times now in the last month.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

2017 Off Road, non-premium sound system
    95K miles on the truck

This is what it looks like when the Function section labels come back on, but the head unit main display is still dead.

I had a similar issue with my 2017 which I traced to the tiny USB hub I had plugged into the USB port for MP3 flash drives. Once I unplugged that the issue stopped, replaced the hub and it's been fine ever since.
Not sure if you even use that port, but it's worth checking if you do.

I was trying to find the Update option yesterday after I restarted the engine and the HU came back to life, but I couldn't find Update. Will dig through the owners manual in next few days.

No, I rarely use the built in USB port, and haven't for the last few months, so I would not expect that to be related, but thank you for the suggestion.
