I’ve always had my keys on lanyards. House, truck, work truck etc.

Harder to lose keys that way too!

They are basically selling everything they make, why should they. If people quit buying them, then you will see changes

Don’t most of us carry a measuring tape in our trucks anyway?

Exactly why I love my Tacoma. Feels and drives like an old school truck.

    Hmmm...
I wake up in the morning and, no shit, say to myself 'Thanks for another one'.
At some point in my day, I distinctly remember the 5 moments in my life in some real hellholes on this the planet, that should have killed me...but didn't.
I'll load up Tucker, the big brown dog, in my pretty cool, red '21 4x4 Tacoma and we'll go to town to maybe grab a coffee, he'll get a banana or biscuit or something that he likes, which is pretty much everything. Or maybe we'll just go for a ride and see what's out there and wave at folks I pass along the way. and Tucker can bark at a cow or two.
At no time during my day, or any other time in my life for that matter, do I ever think of, worry about or stress over my tailgate...holy shit, that's just incredible.
I'd hope that one day...sooner rather than later...everyone who gets wrapped around the axle about tailgates and, well, just the little stuff finds the peace and contentment in your life that I have.
    It's all good you know.
    Happy Motorin' folks.

Gonna have to respectfully disagree here unless you mean 1st gen by old school. It has old school DNA, but trucks started becoming car alternatives in the '90s. I have both, and the Tacoma is more like my wife's Outback than my OBS Ford (which ironically in many cases has a smoother ride than the Tacoma). My coworker's 1st gen Tacoma is more like my 2nd gen Forester than my OBS Ford, still very much by a long shot. 3rd gens are soft trucks with (old school) full size truck dimensions and small size truck capacities and interior space. I shouldn't like it, but I do...

    Just look at today's tailgates.

They have cameras, lights, dampeners, manual locks, power locks, embossing, collapsible steps with a grab handle, measuring sticks, clamping provisions, they can open traditionally, to the left, to the right, split down the middle and open bifold style, open from the cab, open from the fob, open from the taillight, the muti flex turns in to a table or desk, folds into a step, and has it's own smaller tailgate on the tailgate. I Probably over looked something.

Tailgates have become the most over engineered, and over styled component on the truck.

My Tacoma's tailgate does what I want it to do. Not interested in gadgets. Most of the newer innovations are for stuff no one asked for nor wanted. And why some trucks are selling for $60K to over $100K. It's hard to find a basic new truck for $40K.

so sell the tacoma that is just ancient and horrible and going sideways and buy a chevy colorado or what ever truck has a tailgate that accommodates you're needs problem solved
could be worse you could go buy a nice new silverado and have trans issues or a lifter problem from day one.... but at least you will have a tailgate with a ruler
