The same thing was happening this time last year and our neighbourhood was hit, 5 trucks in one night. I spoke to one of the guys who had his stolen and he kept his fobs in a Faraday box... They found pieces of the door handle in the driveway. Thieves plug a computer in the OBDII port and reprogram the vehicles. Consider moving the OBDII port or installing a dummy port.

The good thing about getting your Tacoma stolen is when you get it back and review the dashcam footage you get to see the thieves hooning your truck all over town and driving over stuff you’d never have the courage to drive over. It may be their first time those Kings were really needed! You will have a better sense of your truck’s true off-road capabilities after you invested 1000’s in all those fancy mods then it got too precious for the trails.

H-key FTW! That said, I have replacement value insurance on my truck, so I'd get a brand new one. Problem is, if Tacos are easy to steal, my insurance is going to go up even faster because I doubt the insurance company knows I don't have keyless start.

H key here too with my SR5. I think my insurance is expensive enough at $894 per year for full coverage.
Actually that's probably good for some newer cars and areas.

Still I'm sure if they're going to take mine they can still use the OBD port to program a new key if they got inside or pull it on a rollback, they would have all the time they needed once away with it. Crooks always find ways if the want it bad enough.

Your manual transmission truck is exactly what they want over in the middle east. 90% of the trucks stolen end up there. About 3,4 years ago some bad guys were driving around in syria in a stolen truck from Calgary that still had the company decal on the doors...really, a plumbing company truck from Calgary, Alberta Canada in syria :cool::(

The newest way of stealing vehicles is via the OBD2 port. I'm surprised that here in North America we are shit out of luck getting any protection for the OBD2 ports. In Europe some companies make them so you can lock them. OBD2 port can re program a new key in seconds, so the old keys can be in Faraday cage all you want...somebody was making a plastic flimsy something in the US but any 2 year old could yank it out.

I wonder which is more common over there; pickups from the US and Canada or German StG 44's from WW2.

Any of these vehicles with GPS systems can be tracked through Toyota. It's not as good as live tracking, but it works. But if someone wants it bad enough, they'll get it. There are so many ways around things, it isn't even funny.

Programing a key also makes H key vunrable to that same as the proximity key. All you need is a generic blank and computer software.

I usually disable my key fob after every trip. It's just an habit for me. I guess I'm on a safe side .

ISIS had one of those from Texas too. Only difference is that truck wasn't stolen. The company it was sold to never took the stickers off.

True facts, but it was an auto F150. Turns out it’s a pretty good gun truck.

Just so I understand the H-key scenario:

    1. Thief hides and waits for me to unlock the door with the fob, captures a code?
    2. Thief repeats the unlock code using RF equipment, gains entry
    3. Thief accesses the OBDII port, programs the truck for another H-key that he got from a dealer or somewhere
    4. Thief drives away in my truck

    Is that correct?

I thought the fob uses rolling codes, there is no way to predict the next code from the previous?

I wish my insurance was $894. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area costs me $1600 per yr for insurance. I only drive 7500 miles per yr and have a perfect driving record.
